ILH Leadership Attends Valor Compass Introductory Sessions
ILH intends to implement the Compass SEL Curriculum that was designed and is currently being codified by staff at Valor Collegiate in Nashville Tennessee. Gabe Surface, Head of Curriculum and Instruction, along with two future staff members attended the sessions recently. They were able to tour the school, observe student and staff circles, and participate in the curriculum and circle, as well. In January the team will apply to be a part of the next round of Compass Camp Schools. This would allow ILH to be supported by Valor in their implementation of the curriculum. Gabe came away empowered by this new curriculum. He said, "Providing tier 1 emotional support to all students sets everyone up for the highest level of success both academically and socially. Also, with our focus on 21st Century skills Compass promotes collaboration, soft skills, and an ability to handle tough situations with tact."
ILH Staff Attends ILI Luncheon
ILH leadership recently attended the Indiana Latino Institute's Annual Luncheon. It was impressive to hear about their programming and support to area youth. In fact, one community member affected by their programming spoke of his experiences leading him to an internship with Eli Lilly. His experiences were inspiring. The keynote speaker was Jose Hernandez. His story of aspiring to be an astronaut and the inspiring wisdom his father gave him was also inspirational. He spoke about knowing your goal, knowing how far you are from that goal, creating a road map, focusing on doing well in school, and hard work as the steps his father gave him when he shared his dream of being an astronaut after watching the Apollo 17 mission on TV as a child. He went on to say that perseverance is the ingredient he added given he was turned down the first 11 times he applied to join NASA. This plan and the grit that was required resonates with the work ILH is doing to inspire youth in having a Pathways plan and sticking to that plan. We are so excited to get started on this work with students next fall!

ILH CEO Experiences Life-Changing Trip to Africa
The Mind Trust fellows recently visited South Africa as their yearly educational experience in another country. The trip was life-changing. Although South Africa's educational system is very privatized and not as comparable to the US it was interesting to see what schools are doing with very limited resources. Chrystal House Academy Africa was one of the schools they visited. Fellows also visited the Apartheid Museum, the Mandela House, and Robben Island. They also had dinner with Christo Brand worked at Robben Island and became friends with Mandela. He has since written a book about his experience called Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend. Fellows visited both Johannesburg and Capetown.
