We are finally starting to stick to warmer weather - now bring on the rain!

Some exciting and fun things will be happening at the Extension Office here in these next few months.We have some AWESOME workshops planned for this summer. Be sure to check this newsletter often, as new things will be added weekly.

Webster County and State Wide Dates

4-H Online Enrollment

Miss the early enrollment deadline? No worries! You are still able to enroll until June 15th. This new system is much more simple for both you and our office. You will use your same account log in and password from last time. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions. We encourage you to go through the steps of enrollment below as this is totally different than the old system. Parents who are volunteers only will enroll. Do not enroll if you are just a parent that does not volunteer (club leader, superintendent, project leader, etc.)

Webster County 4-H Rundown

We are excited to have so many new and returning families to Webster County 4-H! It is going to be a FANTASTIC year. Here are some refreshers for you:

  • You must be enrolled in 4-H by June 15th (statewide deadline)
  • All livestock ID forms, registration papers, and vaccination papers must be turned into the office by June 15th. You may email, mail, or drop off these forms.
  • Final entry paper and online forms are due at midnight of June 15th to the office. The online link will be ShoWorks like last year, and will be sent out this month.
  • Livestock tags are free and can be picked up at the office. Animals that need tags are market beef, bucket calves, feeder calves, and swine. Scrapies tags only for sheep and goats (must provide yourself). Animals that need tattoos are breeding beef and rabbits.
  • Fairbooks are free to Webster County 4-Hers and will be available at the office the month of May. It is first come first serve. An online version will be available as well.
  • Entry tags, t-shirts, and back tags will be available to pick up at the fairgrounds the week before fair.

Poultry Shows

Please see the latest press release below about the HPAI Virus. All poultry shows and events are cancelled until May 15th. It will be re-evaluated then.

The new YQCA program is up and running! Thank you all for your patience with the shutdown and change. For the youth who have completed YQCA already this year and plan to go to state fair or AKSARBEN, you will need to go into the new system, create an account, and upload your certificate from this year that you completed. You can do that here: https://yqcaprogram.org/

Save the dates and times for the upcoming in-person trainings.

  • May 23rd – Adams County Extension Office at 1:00 pm (New Date & Time)
  • May 24th – Webster County Fairgrounds at 1:00 pm (New Date & Time)
  • June 7th – Adams County Extension Office at 6 pm (Original Date & Time)
  • June 9th – Webster County Fairgrounds at 6 pm (Original Date & Time

*For in-person trainings, please ask the office for the code to waver the fee. Online trainings are $12 and codes are not valid.

This training is for 4-Hers that show livestock (beef, sheep, pig, goat, poultry, and rabbit) this year at county and/or state fair and is 4-H age 8 or older. This must be completed by June 15th.

2022 District 4-H Horse Shows

We are excited to announce that Webster County is a location for one of the District 4-H Horse Shows for 2022!

2022 Districts Dates and Sites:

June 6- Chadron, NE

June 7- Guide Rock, NE

June 8- Albion, NE

June 9- Raymond, NE

June 10- Kearney, NE

4-H Horse Levels

As of 2020 for Webster County, levels for the county 4-H horse show are recommended, but not mandatory for level 1. If you are participating at districts or state, all other levels must be completed by the time ID sheets are due (May 6th). All other levels and ID sheets for county only may be completed by June 15th.

Online tests are no longer available to 4-Hers. To take a written test, youth must stop in at the Extension Office and take it there. We encourage families to call and let the office know the day and time you would like to take the test.

HPAI Virus in Poultry

The Extension Office and Youth Council wants all potential participants to understand by purchasing and participating in the Market Broiler contest and other poultry classes, it is possible that the Nebraska Department of Ag may cancel all poultry shows for 2022 due to the HPAI Virus. As of now, there is a cancelation through May 1st of all poultry shows and expos. Please stay up to date with HPAI virus and visit www.nda.nebraska.gov for more information. It is the family’s own risk in participating in the broiler contest and poultry classes with no promise of having a poultry show.

Animal Science Discovery Day

The Animal Science Discovery Day leadership team is excited to share the flyer for the event being held at NCTA in Curtis on May 26th. This year’s sessions will focus on Meat Science, the Mobile Beef Lab, Animal Systems, Reproduction, Equine Science, and more! The Premier Animal Science Events is open to youth ages 8 to 18 Dates are Wednesday, June 22 & Thursday, June 23 on UNL, East Campus. Events are Livestock Quiz Bowl, Livestock Skill-a-thon, Poultry Judging, Meats Judging, and Livestock Judging.Please contact Beth Janning if you are interested in participating by May 16th.

Culinary Challenge

This year’s challenge ingredient is wheat. The Webster County Culinary Challenge is June 13th in Bladen starting at 4:00 pm. If you are interested in participating, please let the office know by June 1st. We would like to know if you are registering as a team or individual.

Youth Leadership Conference

Registration for the Youth Leadership Conference is now open! The Nebraska 4-H Youth Leadership Conference is an opportunity for all youth (not just 4-H members!) age 14-18 to build connections with peers from across the state, learn from adult mentors, and develop and practice leadership skills. The Conference will be held June 24-26 at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp. Learn more at 4h.unl.edu/leadership-conference.

Summer Camp & Big Red Camp Registration

State Public Speaking Contest

The State 4-H Public Speaking Contests are coming up next month, and we’re excited to announce, not one, but TWO new opportunities at this year’s event. The event will be held on June 24 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. In addition to Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and Prepared Speeches, youth may also participate in a new Impromptu Speech Contest and a new Video Communication Contest. Meet Our Team!

Alexa Pedersen

Office Manager

Alexa Pedersen is the Office Manager for the Webster County Extension Office. Alexa provides help in assisting clientele with questions that can be forwarded to a specific educator. She assists educators in programs that are put on in Webster County, such as pesticide training, and beef programs. She also provides knowledge in the 4-H world by helping families with any 4-H questions that come in. She is skillful in 4-H Online, ShoWorks, and helps prepare for 4-H programming, county fair, and state fair.

Katie Bolte

4-H Programming Assistant

Katie Bolte is the 4-H Programming Assistant for the Webster County Extension Office. Katie is at the extension office on Mondays and Tuesdays. Katie provides programming in school enrichment, after-school programs, and 4-H workshops. She is knowledgeable when answering any 4-H questions that comes in and helps prepare for programs, county fair, and state fair.

Beth Janning

4-H Youth Development Extension Educator in Adams/Webster Counties

Beth Janning is a 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator. She provides programming in school enrichment, after-school, and traditional 4-H Programs. Her topic areas include but not limited to animal science, science, engineering and volunteer development.

Dr. Lindsay Waechter-Mead

Beef Systems Educator, DVM

Lindsay Waechter-Mead is the new Beef Systems Educator in Webster County and serves surrounding counties in this region. She is excited to bring her interests surrounding cow/calf health and preventative medicine to the Beef Team. Her current work involves looking at environmental effects on neonatal calf immunity and colostral transfer. She is also passionate about rural agriculture and what the veterinary profession can do to positively influence rural communities to ensure that generations can continue to enjoy the life that she loves.
