THE AVIATOR
THE RISE OF ROBERTS
Roberts,
I love my role as a teacher. I believe without a doubt that position does not equal power. You can lead right now regardless of your title. This reminds me of Bill Belichick, the coach of New England Patriots, who is arguably the greatest coach in football. He started his path to leadership for free. Coach Belichick took his first job with the Baltimore Colts as an unpaid understudy dissecting film. He became good in analyzing and breaking down film, which resulted in valuable insights into plays.
This access and learning opportunity gave him the ear of many coaches. Many people today do not want to start from the bottom and work their way up. Before I became an assistant principal, I had to be an apprentice and volunteer my time for several years. I volunteered in the office doing discipline, stayed after school leading parent events, and attended department meetings other than my core subject. I had several setbacks, but the truth was I was not ready. The game changer for me was when I decided to submit to feedback, coaching, professional development, and mentorship. Roberts, I care for each of you dearly. I want to make sure that each and every faculty member at Roberts is on the right pathway of making your dreams come true, but the price is discomfort. You have to learn how to lead by becoming a student of every opportunity presented to you. Please don’t wait for those opportunities to one day magically appear. Never let anyone outwork you and out hustle you in your every day work and calling. Let your work speak louder than words. Our students deserve the best education. You are making such an impact on so many lives.

Steffanie Purucker –Teacher of the Year
Roberts Middle School was founded under the mission statement to strive to inspire students to achieve their personal best through collaborative, innovative educational experiences to meet the challenges of a global community. There is no teacher that lives and breathes our mission statement like Steffanie Purucker. During the nomination process, phrases like “her classroom is magical”, “she gives every student the opportunity to succeed” and “she radiates passion” were just the beginning of how our staff feels about the contribution Steffanie brings to the world of education and the lives of our students at Roberts.
Anyone can teach, but few can inspire, and Steffanie Purucker does just that. When you walk into her classroom you instantly feel at home. She has created a culture of collaboration, respect and support within her four walls. You will often find Steffanie on the floor with her students, immersed in learning with them and meeting each student’s individual needs. Steffanie changes her small group activities on an hourly basis based on data and needs of her students.
Steffanie is the Department Head for Reading and supports her team both instructionally and emotionally. She is also out Campus Materials Manager and for the second year in a row we have had zero textbook deficit. If you visit Roberts after hours or on weekends, it is guaranteed you will see her truck in the parking lot. Steffanie works countless hours to provide the best possible educational experience for Roberts students. She is a leader both inside and outside the classroom and is seen as a source of vast knowledge and skill in education.
Steffanie creates a bond with her students inside and outside the classroom. Steffanie coordinates weekly GT projects for the GT students while also mentoring 5th and 6th grade students to help increase their reading levels and fill gaps. She is also a Name That Book sponsor and was beaming when this year’s team entered the bonus round. She sets goals with her students and pushes them to achieve their goals, celebrating with them when each goal is met. She attends every concert and event that is held on campus for choir, band, orchestra and PE to support not only her students, but all Aviators. All Aviators are seen as Mrs. Purucker’s students, not just the ones she teaches.
Steffanie Purucker is clearly a leader on campus, for her department and in the field of education. I could not be more proud to call her our Roberts Teacher of the Year. She truly encourages students to “be the pilots of their own learning” and achieve anything!
Joshuah Baker – New Teacher of the Year
Roberts Middle School was founded under the mission statement to strive to inspire students to achieve their personal best through collaborative, innovative educational experiences to meet the challenges of a global community. As a new teacher, Joshuah Baker took the mission statement and ran with it in his classroom his first year!
Joshuah has created a classroom of collaboration and respect which is evident when you walk into his room at any point during the day. Not only does Joshuah tutor students daily in the morning, he also hosts students who want to play chess, and even tutors students who he does not teach. Joshuah has a passion for science that permeates all that he does. From the activities in class to funny science related Christmas sweaters, Joshuah breathes science into every moment of every day.
Instruction from the first day of school was rigorous and engaging and he was always seeking out opportunities to grow. He habitually met with his mentor outside the required time to learn and grow his instruction weekly. Joshuah is a team player who contributes to his teammates both in content and in friendly banter. Students and teachers alike can feel the passion that he has for Science and his pride in being an Aviator.
