Basic facts about Syria
The name Syria comes from the word Assyria which was an ancient empire around when the Roman people lived. Syria's flag was inspired by the French Tricolor. The flag also uses the Pan-Arab colors green, black, white, and red. The two stars represent either Syria and Egypt or Syria and Iraq.
Syria's History
Background
Past Syria was originally a part of Greece and most likely comes from the Neo-Assyrian Empire from the 10th century(B.C.). Syria became an independent nation in 1946. In 1958 Syria became a part of the United Arab Republic. They left the Republic in 1961.

Economy
A lot of Syria's economy relies on oil. They make around 40 million dollars per month. Their GDP is 64.7 billion (2011). Their GDP per Capita is 5,200 (2011).

Their government is a republic under an authoritarian regime,
Their leader is Basar al-Assad,
They choose their leaders by voting.

Climate
Syria now gets very little water each year. Around 20cm to be exact. Syria's temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius. Because of their poor climate they have very dry and lukewarm humid years.
