Happennings!! An ever changing list of what's new!!
Our Kindergarteners are really adjusting well at the big school, while our seniors are dabbling in senior projects, college visits, and applications.
We have lots of new faces helping in our school. Many of you met our new teachers at our annual Parent Night, but we also have a few others you may not know about: Amy Marcille, Occupational Therapist ( Wednesday, only), and Tyler Hayde who is our temporary day custodian while Scott Nelson is out on medical leave.
Pat Wygant and Dwayne Brown have taken on the responsibility of monitoring our weight room for those students who like a very early ( 6:00 a.m!!!!) workout! The workout room is also open after practice in the late afternoon.
The Varsity Soccer regular season comes to an end this weekend when they will compete for first place in the Coastal Prep League with wins against the Paul Cuffee School and the Highlander School. They will earn 2nd place with a tie and a win, or 3rd in any other scenario. Playoffs will begin next week. If Block Island finishes the regular season 1st or 2nd they will play on Thursday home. If they finish 3rd, they will play home on Tuesday. Coastal Prep League Championships are scheduled for Monday in Narragansett. The Junior High Soccer team finishes their regular season with games against Wilbur School in Little Compton. Next weekend is the much anticipated Pine Point Soccer Tournament. The team will go off Friday night and play on Saturday. Block Island will play Pine Point at 9am, Williams at 11:15am, and Country School at 12:45pm. The playoffs will be held following the Round Robin tournament.
The sixth graders, with the help and planning of our friends at the Wellness Coalition have once again planned an Island outing for the roots part of the Roots and Wings Program. Later this year, the sixth graders will spread their wings in NYC.
We have some major learning adventures coming up in the winter. The 10th grade will be taking a service learning trip to St. Croix and the 11th and 12th graders will be off to Washington DC to take part in the Close-up government study program. The seventh grade is also planning to spend a week sailing in June. We might be a small school, but we like to plan big.
Our new Student Council, under the direction of Mr. Wygant, has been chosen.
Richard Conant- President
Silas Monje- Vice- President
Bridgette Keane- Treasurer
Mary Conant- Recorder
The Student Council is working to keep our school climate and culture healthy and fun. The events they plan keep the winter blues away and allow us to break from our academic routines for just a little while.
Halloween has been in the air all week and thankfully tricker-treating is on a Saturday night!!! It doesn’t happen very often, but kids and teachers alike find pleasure in the this joyous timing.
We have a new school roof and a new Town Facilities Manager, Mr. Sam Bird. He will help us better maintain our building. A truck load of new LED light bulbs arrived at our school thanks from a grant from National Grid. They will replace less efficient blubs and will be installed in most every light fixture in the coming weeks.
Glen Pence continues to "Wow" us in the school cafeteria, as he takes advantage of all the donated local restaurant post season give-a-ways. Can anyone say crab cakes or lobster calamari pasta!!!??? Thanks to all the Island businesses who often quietly empty their pantries to us at the end of the season, and to Glen who always keeps our lunch program interesting.
Chalk It Up, an event oraganized by Summer Riker to draw attention to Bully Prevention has left its mark on our school building, through colorful anti-bullying slogans on our school walls.
Mr. Tarbox organized the Annual Pickle Ball Tournament and Richie Conant and Julie Gasner were the big winners!!
Grade 6 and Grade 1 students have teamed up to start a Reading Buddies Program. This cross age pairing helps 6th graders see themselves as community helpers and lets our first graders shine as readers.
This is just a sampling of the events that make our school so special. As always, my door is always open. Have a great weekend!!
