Fulmore Middle School Newsletter

Week of 2-8-2016

From the Principal's Desk

Greetings Falcon Families,

Hip! Hip! Hooray! Quiz Bowl participated in the Cougar Clash at Clark High School in San Antonio this past Saturday. Fulmore teams finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the tournament. In addition, two of Fulmore's Quiz Bowl teams have qualified for the Quiz Bowl National Championship tournament that will be held in Atlanta, Georgia in May.

This past weekend, Green Teens sponsored a Work Party at Fulmore's community garden. Participants prepared the foundation for our spring garden. We received a generous donation of garden soil, compost, and mulch from our community partners, Keep Austin Beautiful and Organics “By Gosh.” Students, teachers, and community partners were out “busting a move” (it was a party after all): tilling, weeding, shoveling, and moving the earth. Neighbors stopped by to see what all the excitement was about, and offered support with more compost and an electrical outlet. We appreciate everyone’s time and effort; if you missed this Work Party, the next one is Feb. 13th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Fulmore enjoyed a huge turn-out for our final round of Magnet Testing last Saturday in the cafeteria which ran from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Special thanks goes to all of our prospective families for sharing their Saturday with us and to Ms. Elsbeth Clarson for her help in supporting our prospective students while testing. The Fulmore Magnet application deadline is Friday, February 5th at 4:30 p.m. Notices will be sent to families regarding their student's application on March 11th, 2016.

Next week, a select group of about 50 eighth grade students will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, NAEP testing. This is a national assessment to see what students know in math and reading. Fulmore Middle School and Austin ISD will not receive individual or school scores. However, NAEP shares overall results of 8th grade students’ scores later on in the year via their own communication.

Also next week we have our annual Valentine’s Day Dance. This event starts at 3:45 p.m. and ends at 5:15 p.m. promptly so students can take a school bus home or walk home while it is still light outside. We DO NOT sell tickets at the dance. Advanced ticket sales will occur during lunch.

Valentine’s Day is February 14th. We are respectfully requesting that all Valentine’s Day items such as: candy, flowers, balloons, stuffed animals, etc. are left at home. If students bring these items to school we will ask that they leave them in the front office and pick them up after the last bell rings. We want to keep our learning environment free from distractions.

Fulmore Middle School needs you as one of our PTA officers. Positions are open for next school year and we are asking parents to please volunteer for an officer position or committee leader. If you are interested in learning more please email FulmoreMiddleSchoolPTA@gmail.com. The past few years PTA & PTA Officers has been a few, wonderful, outstanding core group of parents, and we need more people involved with our effort of supporting Fulmore Middle School. We look forward to your interest and participation.

Monday, we have our February CAC meeting. We hope you are able to make it. We start promptly at 4:00 p.m. The purpose of CAC is to communicate with our community about the events taking place at Fulmore and to advise the principal on programming and budget issues. We will review the 2015-2016 budget during our March meeting.

Enjoy the weekend.
