Curriculum Updates:
THEME:
Students will wrap note taking on their brain topic while simultaneously learning how to write feature magazine articles.
MATH:
Students have been participating in a math logic topic of choice. Logic topics include: Ken Ken puzzles, missing number substitutions, soma cubes, In and out patterns and functions and Magic Squares. We will wrap up this logic unit at the end of January.
TOPIC STUDY:
Students have selected an independent research topic, written an essential question to drive their research, and selected a note taking method to engage with their research material. Independent research has allowed students the opportunity to apply the research skills they learned during theme study to a topic of their own interest. During topic study fourth and fifth grade students helped second and third grade students write essential questions.
CRITICAL THINKING:
Students will continue working on defining and applying critical thinking vocabulary. As we finish vocabulary we will examine critical thinking concepts such as "Math and Science will tell you the truth," "Occam's Razor", "Mistakes and Frustrations are part of the learning process", "Statistics can lie", and "Bias is everywhere."
SCIENCE: Students continue to conduct a variety of qualitative science experiments. Our focus is to apply the scientific method, draw conclusions from data and represent data visually through graphs.
PGD: We continue to focus on grit and perseverance as part of the learning process. Students will continue to conduct Personality Style Inventories (PSI) to learn more about themselves as people and learners.
