School News
Parents,
This is a busy time of year with so much to get done before we leave for our Winter Break.
If you are planning for holiday gifts, please consider a book or a magazine subscription. There are so many wonderful titles to choose from that it is easy to find something your child will enjoy. If you need a recommendation, please contact your child’s teacher or our Media Specialist, Laura McGilberry for an idea.
Yarbrough Elementary received several FACES Grants this year, with Kim Roberts receiving our highest funded grant at $585. Not only did Mrs. Roberts receive a large grant, the company matched her purchase so she was able to get twice as much as she had hoped to receive.
I want to give a huge thank you to our YES PTO who planned, prepared and worked for many hours so our Race to the Red Carpet would be successful. It is wonderful to know that all the money raised will directly support students and programs at YES.
I hope you and your family have a restful and relaxing holiday season,
Pete Forster

Art Action with Mr. Daniel
The Y.E.S. Art Dept. is having an exciting time as we rapidly approach the month of December! Our fourth grade art students are working on "Primary Yellowhammer/Zoom In Flower" compositions. They're using imagination, skill, craftsmanship, shapes, forms, vivid colors, visual texture, and proportion to render their version of Alabama's State Bird: "The Northern Flicker (Yellowhammer)." These compositions are being painted using watercolors. We're also painting our version of Alabama's state flower: The Camellia. We're studying the works of John James Audubon as well.
Our fifth grade art students are completing their "Complementary Hot Chocolate" compositions. We used imagination, line, shape, form, color, and proportion to render these works of art in oil pastel. We used complementary colors to provide a sense of balance, variety, and unity within our work. Next we'll develop compositions that create the appearance of movement by utilizing equal amounts of positive/negative space within a work of art. We'll explore the works of Op Art rendered by Bridget Riley.
The Auburn Public Library will feature the artwork of : Richland, Creekside, and Yarbrough for the month of December. Thank you in advance for supporting our young artists.

Music Messages from Mrs. Oprandy
All YES students sang beautifully for our veterans during the Veterans Day program! There were numerous comments from the veterans and their family members saying that our students sang enthusiastically and behaved very respectfully.
Fourth and fifth grade students are learning to sing a three-part canon while performing body percussion and learning to sing a partner song. Partner songs and canons are ways for students to experience multiple-part singing.
Fifth graders began their adventure in learning to play the recorder! Students were introduced to the parts of the recorder, how to align the parts of a recorder, how to use a neck strap, and practiced the three positions when playing the recorder. Once those routines were firmly in place, students went outside and blew bubbles using their breath and a bubble wand to understand how not to blow the recorder and how to correctly blow the recorder. They are currently learning to play the notes B and A.
Fourth grade students learned more about pitch and practiced playing high and low pitches on the barred instruments. They also composed their own melody with a high and low pitch and performed those melodies on barred instruments. Fourth graders learned and practiced playing a new rhythm notation, the quarter rest. They increased their music vocabulary when learning about dynamics, specifically piano and forte, and tempo, specifically presto and largo.
Venture Visit with Mrs. Roberts
We are wrapping up our Design Engineering Unit. The children have worked very hard. Students have broken problems into component parts, extracted key information, and developed models to understand complex systems. They have used different materials such as K’Nex, structure blocks, hobby sticks, dominoes, and even toilet paper and paper towel rolls! This unit has given the students building knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues, developing ideas, and pursuing solutions.
TechKnow Robotics
Our robotics teams have continued to work every day during our working lunches and after school two days a week. They are dedicated to their team members and their robot. The robotic challenges they are presented help enhance their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills through hands-on, student-centered learning.
Spelling Bee
We will have the Yarbrough Elementary school-wide Spelling Bee on December 3rd at 10:30 a.m.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
In December we fill focus on self-esteem and relationships. Self-esteem is important because it affects one’s behaviors and thoughts. Self-esteem impacts one’s life and choices. Parents can help boost their children’s self-esteem by helping them look for good role models to learn from, helping them focus on achievements not failures, setting reachable goals, smiling and walking with confidence, practicing the things they do well, always putting forth their best effort, and spending time with people who love them. Talk with your children about keeping a good attitude even when bad things happen in life. Be that “example” that your child wants to grow up and be like.
Quote of the month: “The man who does not value himself, cannot value anything or anyone.”
