Hawk Talk
Peninsula High School - November 24th, 2020
A Message from Dr. Potts
Dear Seahawk Families,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Peninsula High School, I would like to wish you and your family a warm and restful Thanksgiving Holiday. Thanksgiving has been a part of the Americana dating back to the 1600s. The holiday has evolved certainly, but now, as then, the purpose has remained the same: take stock, give thanks, and spend time with family and friends.
As we head into this holiday, we have finished the first quarter of the academic semester. This means that we still have over half of the first term to increase engagement and improve performance. Teachers are ready and available to help students during ILT or office hours. These are two times per day on M, T, TH, F—one in the morning from 7:30 to 8:40 and another in the late morning from 11:15 to 12:20. Teachers are available to provide support to students who request assistance; parents may contact teachers asking for this time and attention for students, too. If your student is struggling, there is no better way to get help than to request extra time during ILT.
Wednesdays offer additional time for assistance for those who need it. Any student may request time and support during the ILT time on Wednesday mornings from 8:40 to 10:50. And after the Thanksgiving holiday, we will be offering opportunities to meet—safely—here at school for those who require extra support in small groups of five or fewer. More about this in December.
Speaking of December, this version of the newsletter contains a number of activities and opportunities for students and the Community. HOSA will sponsor a blood drive at PHS on the 7th of December, the same date that our VPO will hold its fall meeting. Please also take a moment to view the school’s virtual fight song—it is really great. Also, if you or someone you know has a particular need, we have included a resource guide for families that may be of assistance.
We are living in challenging times for sure, yet there are many things to look forward to, including a vaccination that will make a return to a near-normal school life possible. And in the meantime, if there is a way for us to be of service, please do contact us here at the school. Our webpage quick-response email system is monitored hourly each school day.
With thanks,
Joe Potts, Ph.D.

PSAT Testing- CANCELLED
PSAT testing cancelled for January 26
In recent years, PSD has paid for and provided PSAT testing during the school day for all students in 10th and 11th grade. Because the PSAT can only be administered in-person, we are not able to offer testing during the January 26 test date. Students in 11th grade will have the opportunity to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship program through an alternate method. More information from the scholarship program is expected about this alternate qualification method in February.
