The Fun Has Begun!!
Second Grade has hit the ground running! This week, we will be adjusting to a new schedule. Please check out our websites to see the changes.
Important Reminders
Snacks
Please send a healthy snack to school with your child each day to help maintain energy
and attention until lunch time. Please make sure the snack is something that can be eaten
easily while working. Your child may bring a water bottle to school (water only, please).
There is also a fountain in our classroom. Also – please remember Mrs. Troutman's room is a “nut-free” classroom!

Math
- In Everyday Math, students are continuing Unit 1 – Establishing Routines. We will build our fact fluency by finding combinations of 10, count money using quarters, and explore odd & even numbers.
- We will continue practicing basic facts this week. The students will participate in paper pencil math fact activities as well as iPad activities. You will also get a login for your child for XtraMath.org so your child can practice their math facts!
- Students will also be taking Two-Minute Timings bi-weekly this year. This is an assessment to monitor their progress with basic facts. This will be explained in further detail at Back To School Night!
- Just two minutes of nightly practice will help our students learn their basic facts!
Reading
In Reader's Workshop, we will take charge of our reading by not only deciding WHAT we want to read, but HOW we want to read it. Students will review how to take a sneak peek of their books to make predictions and decide how the book should be read.
We will also begin Word Study with a “practice” sort to learn the routines. Your child will receive a sort that is indicative of his/her word study level during the week of September 16th.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, our first unit is Citizenship. We are studying groups, communities, and the purpose of rules. During this unit, the students will have the opportunity to meet with Dr. McKillip to learn about her role as the leader of FC and our Superintendent, Dr. Lloyd, to also hear about her role at the leader of OJR.
