Van Brunt Newsletter

February Edition 2018

Dear Van Brunt Families,

We are off to a strong start for second semester. Teachers are working hard planning lessons to meet student needs and students are learning new things every day! We are so proud of the high levels of learning happening in all grade levels. Students have completed their mid-year iReady assessment and are working to set learning goals for the remainder of the year. As I am enjoying time in classrooms, I continue to see students engaged and having fun.

There are so many exciting things coming up in the second half of the year. February brings the talent show and referendum open houses. We hope you are able to join us for these events.

We appreciate the continued support of our families and the positive partnerships to help all students succeed. With our first round of the new standards-based report cards recently going home, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher or myself if you have any questions.

Sneak Peak in the Lunchroom

Attendance Matters!

For the month of January, Van Brunt ran another attendance challenge! We celebrated the classes that had the highest rate of attendance for the month. Our first place winners were Ms. Voit's class. Mrs. Sawyer and Mrs. Borgstrom made breakfast in the classroom for the students. There is another attendance challenge happening this month! Please help your child’s class win by having them to school each day and on time! Attendance matters and we need your help to ensure everyone has an on-time, positive start to the day!

Dropping Students Off

Just a friendly reminder. Please make sure that you are not dropping off your child in the bus area or in the crosswalks. Please have your child use the sidewalk to get to the crosswalks and then cross the street with our supervisors. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe!

After School Pick Up

If you are using the parking lot to pick up your child after school please be sure to park your car in an appropriate parking stall and get out of your car to greet your child. With the cold weather, we have had a little congestion near the gym entrance and would like to ensure that students can exit the school building safely. Thank you for your help in this matter!

School District Referendum

We will be having two Informational Open Houses on the School District Referendum. Please stop in either Feb. 12 from 5:00-7:00 PM or March 1 from 5:00-7:00 PM. You can go to either the High School or Van Brunt. Hope to see you there!

Getting to know the Team of the Month

Molly Finkler

I have been with Kindergarten in the Horicon School District for 22 years. I have watched

our school develop through many changes and improvements these past 2 decades. Our school has held high expectations for our students to strive for throughout these years. I have begun to work with a second generation of students! (Students of my former students are coming to school!) Watching the family connections has been memorable. I love hearing the giggles in our classrooms and watching supportive citizenship among our students and adults. It is so rewarding to watch learning occur while having fun and being good friends. During my free time I enjoy reading, taking photographs, caring for our pets, and walking in the woods with my family. I thoroughly enjoy my time with our Van Brunt families. Thank you for a rewarding 22 years of service!

Stephanie Holl

I have been teaching Kindergarten in Horicon for 3 years now. I am so happy that I have the chance to teach in the community that I live in. What I like most about working here is seeing all the smiling faces and receiving hugs every day! I also love that we have some of the most polite and helpful students. It is a joy to work with the students and see them progress through the year. During my free time I enjoy reading, going for walks, going water skiing, and spending time with my family. I love having the opportunity to work with all of the Van Brunt families!

Jill Curry

The Horicon School District has been my home for most of my life. I went through our school system, graduated from HHS, and came back to teach here for the past 30 years. My husband, Rick, and I grew up here and continue to live in Horicon. My children attended Horicon school district as well. Now I have a granddaughter attending 4K in Van Brunt. As a citizen, a mother, and a teacher, I have a lot invested in this community and school and a lot of love for it. My mother also worked in the school district, first as a library aide and then as a secretary at the high school. The ties are deep. I work with special education students. I have always been drawn to those that need a little extra help, support, and TLC to be successful. I have met and worked with many magnificent students, families, and staff. I have three children, 5 grandchildren, and 2 dogs. I love to cook and spend time with my family. Most of my time in the evening and on weekends is spent reading. I love books, old and new. I spend as much time as I can outdoors. I have a big flower garden and have a beautiful view of the Horicon Marsh. I consider myself lucky to be part of this school community.

Deanna Stam

Although teaching was not on my radar during college (I have a BA in social work), I absolutely love being a Special Ed Aide. This is my 5th year working at Van Brunt. The teachers I work with are so wonderful. I truly enjoy working with the students and watching them make gains in their learning. The hugs that I receive and give are an added bonus! In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family which includes my husband, Robert, sons Nicholas and Connor, and daughter, Holly. I also enjoy reading, walking, and decorating cakes.

Sarah Kuhnz

This is my first school year with the Horicon School District. I am so happy to be here and have felt a warm welcome from everyone! My favorite part of working at the schools is creating relationships with our students and being able to care for them. In my free time, I love to read, shop and spend time with my husband and 4 children. I look forward to many more school years with the Horicon School District!

Choose Kindness

One of our 4th grade students is starting a kindness movement! We invite everyone to join our Mary in creating "Horicon Hats from the Heart"!
Mary states, "I wanted to start a kindness movement and thought of the idea of Horicon Hats from the Heart. I have recently developed a love for knitting hats and wanted to share them with others. The hats are homemade and will go to students that do not have a hat."
We are so proud of you Mary and your heart for others! What a cool idea!
