WHAT'S HAPPENING - CPS

Growing, Learning and Achieving Together
Dear Spartan families,
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2021!
We hope that all of you found an opportunity to relax, recharge and spend some quality time with close family over the holiday season! We begin the new year with a return to remote learning, but we are very optimistic that this critical initiative intended to keep us safe will be short lived and that we will be back in school in the very near future. Please continue to monitor the media, the LDSB Website and the Centreville Public School Website for important developments and changes in our current status.
What we did in December!
As always, December proved to be an exciting month! Our Junior and Intermediate students began December with an opportunity to participate in an interactive workshop with the YMCA Youth Gambling Awareness Program entitled “Game-Bling": When Gaming Meets Gambling. The workshop explored the boundaries between online gaming and gambling as well as teaching strategies for making safe and healthy decisions when dealing with this rapidly expanding industry. Teachers and students thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity, and we are looking into a follow up session on Financial Literacy where students will be invited to explore personal finances, budgeting and money management. Our annual Jingle Bell Walk took place on December 11, 2020, and students celebrated the season by listening to Christmas Carols and Songs while walking around the school yard mingling with classmates. As part of our Jingle Bell Walk, we collected non-perishable foods for the Newburgh-Camden Lions Club Christmas Baskets. As a result of Centreville’s generosity, the Lions Club were overwhelmed when they came to collect 7 boxes of food. Well done, Centreville! Lifetouch in collaboration with the LDSB and Kingston Public Health, developed a comprehensive safety protocol and were able to visit the school to take every student’s individual photo. During the month of January, we will receive a proofs package that will be sent home to parents to review. Each package will contain an access code which you will be able to use to make a picture order. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact the school. The final week of the school year was enormously celebratory with students participating in a number of Spirit Days, holiday activities and even a couple of special visits! Thank you to Stone Mills Township for all of their support!
We would like to offer a special “shout out” to Michaela Doolittle who organized a terrific PAC Christmas Charcuterie Raffle Basket Fundraiser. Thanks to Michaela and the enormous generosity of the Centreville community, this event raised $ 1785.00 for our students. Congratulations to Kathy Greenslade who was the lucky winner of the basket of goodies. A special thank you to the following organizations who contributed to the prize basket:
Sheila's Greenhouse
The LCBO
The MacKinnon Brothers
Wilton Cheese
Quinn's Meats
What is Happening in January!
January is an important month in schools as teachers are completing their final assessments of student progress in preparation for the completion of first term report cards. In conjunction with the reporting period, students will have a Professional Activity Day on January 29th so that teachers can make final deliberations before completing reports. Our Supervisory Officer, Alison McDonnell, will be making her first visit of the new school year on January 28th. We look forward to these opportunities to receive valuable feedback from our Senior Leadership team. Finally, our school's Parent Leadership Group (PAC) will be meeting on January 13th at 6:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings which are being held virtually this year. Please contact the school if you would like an invitation!
As always, the health and safety, along with the wellness and mental health of our school community, is our number one priority as we move forward. Please continue to make your own wellness and the wellness of your family a priority.
Take good care everyone!

Principal, Centreville Public School
REMINDERS
1. Please be sure to send a water bottle to school with your child on a daily basis. We have a very limited supply of bottles that we can loan out if necessary.
2. Please be sure that you continue to use the School Messenger App to record your child's absences. We have a very strict absence protocol to follow this year and it is important that everyone use the systems provided! Please see the "How To" information provided at the bottom of this newsletter. Thank you for your kind attention to this matter!
3. If you are driving your children to school, please ensure that they are here before the bell at 8:50 a.m. Many teachers give important instructions and/or engage in the first activities of the day as close to 8:50 a.m. as possible and if your child is late, it makes for a disruptive start to the day! Thank you for your support!
4. Please ensure that you are putting labels in all of your children's belongings. We have recently subscribed to Mabel's Labels to make this process easier and as an added bonus, we receive a percentage of sales to go towards children's learning resources. See link below and be sure to click on the box that indicates Support a Fundraiser and then search for Centreville Public School!
