What About Other Types of Small Groups?
Interactive Read Aloud (Small group with teacher. All join in on the thinking work of a book that the teacher is holding)-great to give practice to those kids needing help with specific cognitive strategies both one at a time or with the integration of those strategies.
Interactive Writing (Small group with teacher. All join in on the creation of a piece of writing)-Great to practice spelling and word strategies and for vocabulary practice.
Shared Reading (Small group with teacher. All have text in front of them)-Great to work with word strategies for primary grades especially when planned in a manner in which you meet more than once with a group. Great for content area subjects with intermediate levels and supports cognitive strategy work as well as orientation, structure identification etc.
Shared Writing-(Small group with teacher scribes (always holds pen) the contributions made by kids.) Great for process practice (brainstorming, revision, drafting etc.)
