Horace Mann & Leet Center Connect
September 25, 2020
Dear Families,
Thank you for the responses to the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) survey sent out recently. Your involvement in PAC is so important to us and we value your input in our decision-making. The next PAC meeting will be held on Thursday, October 1 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Families will receive a Zoom link and agenda through Seesaw and Brightwheel prior to the meeting. We hope you can join us.
Thank you to all of our families for doing such a great job of adjusting to the needed drop off and pick up procedures for this year. We just have a couple of reminders. Our school day officially begins at 7:50 am. It is of particular importance that our K-6 friends arrive on time to ensure they do not miss valuable instructional time. Also, if you need to pick your child up early for a doctor's appointment, please have your child picked up before 2:45 pm to avoid congestion and confusion with dismissal times. We appreciate your assistance in creating smooth arrivals and dismissals for our children.
So far, we have had no positive COVID cases at school or the need to contact the Nodaway County Health Department for contact tracing. If and when that time comes, we will work to make the appropriate notifications with county health and keep families up to date. We appreciate the communication our families are offering and the care they are taking to keep their children home when children are sick.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. King & Mrs. Rouner

We will be keeping the students with their cohorts during their tutoring time. Please note we will be meeting Horace Mann safety guidelines regarding social distancing, masks, and cleaning.

A Note from the Gym Teacher
The school year has started out great in Physical Education and we are already learning new skills and getting fit and healthy at the same time!
Just a reminder to all students:
- Everyone needs a clean pair of tennis shoes to wear in Physical Education.
- Younger students keep practicing shoe tying so you can get them on quickly.
- Please don't wear necklaces, jewely, hats or coats in the gym for safety purposes
- If you have longer hair please pull it back so it doesn't obstruct your vision during games.
Thanks for all your help,
Gina McNeese

If these are books you would rather your child(ren) not read, we have identified three replacement titles from previous Mark Twain nominee lists:

You are more than welcome to contact me at mshield@nwmissouri.edu to request any of these books if you would like to read them before making them available to your children.

Horace Mann Laboratory School * Phyllis & Richard Leet Center
Horace Mann Laboratory School is located on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University. Horace Mann is one of only a small number of laboratory schools in the United States. Horace Mann provides a hands-on, project-based learning, individualized approach that is only possible with small class sizes and multiple teachers. Students of all ages make Horace Mann home, from our youngest kindergarten students to University practicum students. Master teachers provide a unique learning environment for all students that include technology, innovative best practices, and exemplary educational experiences. From measuring temperatures and creating data tables at our University Pond, learning about recycling at the on-campus recycling center, roller skating and swimming lessons in Physical Education class, and multicultural education from student organizations on campus, Horace Mann provides the best educational experience for your child.
At the Leet Center, family relationships and children are our passion! At the heart of our learning together, you will find educators who see children as capable learners. Children learn through investigation, exploration, and communication. Our pre-school environment is a natural home-like atmosphere that is filled with inquiry and joy each day.
The Leet Center is also home to our developing outdoor classroom and we believe that all the learning that happens indoors can also be present in the outdoor spaces. Open-ended materials and carefully cultivated spaces provide a place for collaboration, thinking, and representation of ideas. Our learning community includes educators and university students who are working together to listen and learn with children. Children, educators, and families each play an important role in honoring the intellectual and emotional integrity of children.
