"Are we ALL reading chapter books!?" - Kayla
Yes we are! Guided reading has officially begun! We have spent the majority of the year learning about each individual station of the Daily 5. These include read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, and work on writing. We are now all confident in our ability to complete each station independently while I meet with reading groups. Just like all of our other subjects, our reading groups will be focused around a learning target. The learning target for this group (pictured) was "I can preview the text to form predictions for what will happen in the story" Ask your kiddo about their book and what predictions they have made so far.
What are "interventions" ?
Math interventions started this week at LP. During interventions, each third grade teacher teaches a different skill, standard, or concept that we've hit during math. Students are grouped for interventions based on common strengths and areas for improvement. This way kiddos are being enriched but also receiving the repetition needed to better understand a difficult concept.
Did you hear??
Our entire class has been awarded HEART tickets for our positive behavior choices in the hallways! TWICE. That means that not only one, but TWO, teachers have walked by our class in the hall and believed that every single one of our kiddos was showing HEART. Way to go! We've worked really hard on our HEART project and it is finally displayed on the wall in front of our classroom. Each letter is filled with a collage of statements and pictures of how we each show HEART at Laurelton-Pardee. If you still don't know what HEART is... Ask your 3rd grader! They are professionals!
Math Support at Home
As you know, we have been practicing our math facts in school a lot. I'm hoping to be able to see some of that work following through at home. Being in third grade, our kiddos LOVE to use their iPads. An app available for them to use is called Front Row. The app looks like the image posted to the right. If you click on Front Row, then click on Math, then click on Fluency Practice, your kiddo can practice multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division facts. This app allows ME to receive the data for all of the work your kiddo completes on Front Row. There is also an app on their iPads called "Math Cards" and this allows them to practice fact fluency as well, however, it does NOT offer me ANY of their data. So if we are getting bored of Front Row, please feel free to practice using the other app for a little.
We LOVE to teach.
As the year progresses and we learn more and more, we love being able to get up in front of our classmates and show them how we solved a problem! It is fun to see the different strategies we use to find the same answer!
We LOVE to read.
This reading group was ALL smiles during our reading of Nate the Great and the Missing Key. We had a lot of fun predicting where we think they key might be... Hmmm...
We LOVE to celebrate!
LP helps us celebrate our positive behavior choices by allowing winners of the HEART ticket drawing to select a special prize! Here you will see a group of girlies who chose "lunch in the courtyard" as their special prize!
Things to keep in mind:
- We have snack every single day. Please send your child to school with a snack if you are able to. If for some reason you can not, I will always have a school safe snack as a back up available.
- If you have not signed up for a parent-teacher conference please email me at theopistie_konstantinidis@eastiron.monroe.edu I look forward to hear from you.
- The book fair is coming to LP next week! It will run from Monday-Wednesday.
