Putting Grades into Perspective
Grades in schools are an age old tradition. Grades are used not just to signify that a student has mastered a subject matter but they are used to classify students as Good, Great, and Failure. The problem is students begin to buy into and believe that they are failures. This may give them the excuse they are looking for not to try something that is hard for them. A life lesson that we all have to face is that failure is a part of life. It is what we learn to do with failure that will define how we deal with adversity throughout our lives.
It is time to start looking at grades as just one indicator of a student’s potential. We all have taken a class and received a grade that we were satisfied with but deep down we knew we could have done better. Though being mediocre shouldn’t be what students strive for, letting grades determine their self-worth is counter-productive. The key is finding what each student is interested in and what their unique talent is. While receiving an education is important, there is no single path to greatness. Many very successful people have achieved great things even though their high school and college grades might have indicated they were failures. Ronald Reagan once said, “But there are advantages to being elected President. The day after I was elected, I had my high school grades classified Top Secret.”
Success requires passion, perseverance, emotional intelligence and the ability to understand the value of failure. Intelligence is subjective, and academic achievement is not always an accurate way to measure it. This is why there are so many average students who end up doing extraordinary things. They understand what it means to struggle, and often have to overcome more obstacles than many people realize. A person’s character, determination, creativity, and integrity ultimately determine their direction in life.
What students need to be doing is working to their fullest potential in every class. If students invest fully in every opportunity, they will discover their strengths, improve on their weaknesses, and ultimately learn how to succeed no matter the obstacle in spite of the grade at the top of the paper.
