Newsletter Week 1 Term 1

Rotherham School 1 February 2023

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome back to the 2023 school year at the “Best Little School in North Canterbury”. I hope you all had a fun and well rested break with your whanau over the holidays. It has been great to have all the students back and hear their wonderful holiday stories.

Thanks to all those who came to prizegiving last year and we really enjoyed seeing Santa on the sleigh again!

Our long awaited toilet upgrade is finally finished and we are enjoying having our modern new toilets with sensor taps and hand dryers! We also had our new roof installed in the holidays as well.

A very warm welcome to Ginny Macfarlane who will be teaching with Rachel in the Junior Room.

Ginny is very excited to be back and is enjoying getting to know all of the students.

We have a very busy term with lots of exciting things happening and I will be putting our Term Planner on Hero so you can keep track of dates. There is also our calendar on the Rotherham School website.

Just a reminder that school is closed on Monday for Waitangi Day so enjoy your long weekend!😄

Growth Mindset and Character Strengths

The Senior Room will be having a big focus on building resilience and growth mindset for the start of the year. As part of this we will be doing our 'Awesome Ends in Me' Journals most days of the week where the students focus on what they are grateful for, their emotions and strategies to keep calm and building a positive attitude. We are very lucky that the Home and School fund these amazing journals each year. We also are looking at character strengths and a great website that we are using is https://www.viacharacter.org/resources/activities.

Wai Swim Lessons 7th - 17th February

These will be every day over the next 2 weeks so please ensure your child has their named swimming togs and towel each day. We are very lucky to have these instructors come up to our school from Rangiora and they teach the students valuable swimming and water safety skills. We will be having lunch at 12.00pm every day while we have Wai Swim Lessons. This programme is funded by the Waimakariri District Council, supported by the Lions Foundation, in North Canterbury who provide the instructors for 10 half hour lessons. We are very lucky that the Home and School fund this important programme. The programme is a part of our School Curriculum and ensures that all our children have some specialised swimming instruction

over their first 6 years at school.💦💦

Parents Information Afternoon - Thursday 16th February 3.20pm

On Thursday 16 February we are inviting all parents in to explain how to use the Hero App. After this Rachel and Ginny will be explaining the routines and organisation of the Junior Room followed by an explanation of the Senior Room routines. As there are parents in both classes there will be a gap between the Junior and Senior Room presentations.

Emergency Contact Details

It is essential that all of our children have emergency contacts listed in Hero.

If for any reason you are not available we need to have someone to contact.

Please make sure that school is provided with details for your emergency contacts and that these details are kept up to date.

If you have any questions or want to make any changes to the contacts you have listed please contact Nicky on office@rotherham.school.nz or phone 03 315 6368.

School Bus

If your child uses the school bus service please make sure that school is aware of days that your child will not be on the bus eg attending sports practice, picked up on set days by a family member.

If plans change on a daily basis please call the school office by 2.30pm to make sure staff are aware of your child's travel plans.

These details can be updated regularly by contacting Nicky on office@rotherham.school.nz or phone 03 315 6368.

Lunch Orders

Children may order their lunch from the Rotherham Store or from the Rotherham Hotel on Fridays only. Lunch orders will be ordered every alternate Friday (the same day as Assembly Days).

In order to save confusion we require a separate envelope for the store and the hotel, containing money, with the order and child’s full name written on the outside. This is put in the lunch order box at the start of school.
