Department News-Social Studies Department
Social studies students have been busy partnering with community groups this fall!
In October over 100 history and government students took the Americanism and Government Test hosted by the American Legion Post 118. Commander Brunner proctored the test along with other trustees. The test covered topics ranging from the US Constitution to the US Flag to Local Government. Students participating can win scholarship money and the chance to go on a trip to Washington DC.
In addition, 37 social studies studies participated in the Voices For Democracy Essay Contest hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1662. The prompt was "Why is the Veteran Important?" Students participating can also win scholarship money, up to $30,000 at the national level.
For Veterans Day, hundreds of students worked on a school wide project to interview veterans who are family, neighbors, or friends and display their stories all around the school. The theme was "Honoring Veterans By Hearing Their Stories". In addition to displaying pictures and interviews, students decorated the school hallways with flags placed in flag holders made by 3D printers in the Makerspace. In addition, 20 students volunteered to help set up and serve the community meal for Veterans at the VFW Post 1662.
In addition, the social studies department is promoting the Theatre's production of "All My Sons" this weekend and is encouraging the collection of donations for Valor Home, transitional housing for homeless veterans.
Coming up, many history students have signed up to volunteer for the Amherst Historical Society's "Christmas in the Village" held on November 26 from 5:30-7:30. Visitors to this free community event can experience Christmas in Amherst set in the 1800s.
