Cardinal Connection
October 2018
Parent Teacher Conferences
We love partnering with you to help ensure your child is successful. We appreciate any chance to talk to you about opportunities for growth and about successes. Parent Teacher Conferences is one of those times. To help prepare for conferences, you can find tips at this link. We will be sending out notes to schedule times shortly. If you are unable to make it to conferences, please reach out to your child's teacher to schedule another time.
Thank you for your continued support!

School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS)
The PBIS framework is an opportunity to help students focus on good behavior and strive to succeed. Individual students will have an opportunity to be recognized for following our school expectations in all parts of the building. These expectations are being safe, respectful, and responsible. When a staff member catches a student doing an exceptional job with one or more of expectations, he/she receives a “Cardinal Cash.”
How does PBIS benefit our school?
It’s a proactive and consistent approach to school-wide discipline which will assist in improved student achievement.
It gives staff the opportunity to be involved in the decision-making process. (Shared leadership approach)
It provides data to assess needs and make informed decisions.
It provides increased feedback and support to staff.
It creates consistent language and expectations across all school areas.
Ultimately, PBIS implementation provides a decrease in addressing challenging behaviors which thereby increases overall instructional time.

From Art- Mrs. Vance
There have been many busy hands at work in the art room, and we have had an exciting start to the school year.
5th Grade has just completed their 3D Self-Portraits. Each one is unique and shows the personality of the student who made it. The kids LOVED making these!
4th Grade has been working on the art contest for the Mayor’s Christmas Concert. Each elementary school in the district will select artwork to send into the contest as a possible winning entry for the cover of the program in December. More to follow... Next 4th graders have been working on Ocean Seascapes adding details on the beach and in the water. They are creating a foreground, middle- ground and background in the picture.
3rd Grade has been learning about cityscapes and the artist James Rizzi, as well as the artist VIncent van Gogh. Students created a James Rizzi style cityscape with bright colors and faces on the buildings and added a “Starry Night” background.
2nd Grade has been hard at work learning all about texture. They created “Texture Chickens” by adding tissue paper for feathers, and also added bumpy legs, pointy beaks, ruffled wings all made from paper.
From Music- Ms. Clark
Happy Fall, Mallinson families!
We’re having a great start to fall by exploring different elements of music. The 3rd-5th graders have finished taking their pre-test and are ready for new information. The 2nd graders have started composing their own songs, as well! They’re doing a marvelous job. The 3rd graders have started learning patriotic songs for our Veteran’s Day program (more information will come out later about that). The 4th graders are learning about different instruments from around the world. We are focusing, currently, on the many different types of drums that can be found in different countries and how they are similar or different than ones we know about. The 5th graders are about to jump into a research project to gain more knowledge on different types of music genres. It’s a busy time in music class, but it’s so much fun!

From PE- Coach Ross
Hello again Mallinson Parents:
We have had a great start to this 2018-2019 school year! Your students had fun learning about effective communication and team strategies. The goal was to familiarize your students with teambuilding concepts with offering and accepting help to and from others. These concepts were discussed and experienced through active teambuilding games and challenges. Our conversations regarding their natural impulses and reactive tendencies seemed to bring about an awareness to daily behaviors in all people. These are some of the discussions we’ve had during their debriefing of each activity. In Mrs. Giraldo’s 5th grade class, students were able to transfer a concept in gym back to a classroom activity. That’s exactly what we are trying to do in our gym classes! We are being intentional with cross referencing athletic and academic skills. So far, all of the classes are doing well! The good news is their critical thinking skills are also improving daily. We are currently testing our 4th and 5th graders with a physical fitness pre-test. Their post-test will be administered sometime in the spring semester.
As for our second and third graders, they are still having fun playing games and acclimating to a new school environment. However, they too are learning exciting new games like the fox and rabbit game that focuses on helping their peers!
Parents, just a quick warning that we are now on track towards starting our physical fitness testing very soon which involves running laps and stations. Our students really enjoy stations! Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Nevertheless, they will get through it but they may complain about being tired or sore. One final note, if your child has asthma or breathing issues and needs their inhaler, please contact our school nurse or send their inhaler with them to leave at the nurse’s office. It’s important for the school to be aware of any health concerns regarding your child. Again, I would like to thank parents for their help with making sure your students bring their tennis shoes to school for PE.
Thank you in advance for your support!
Respectfully,
Coach Ross
From the Counselor- Ms. Wiese
Hello Mallinson parents and guardians,
I hope the school year has gotten off to a fantastic start for you and your students!
Please feel free to contact me at (816) 521-5530 or hannah_wiese@isdschools.org with questions or concerns regarding your student/students.

During the month of September, we got to do lots of fun stuff in our counseling lessons.
Second graders learned about tattling versus reporting. They learned about how tattling is when you tell to get someone in trouble while reporting is when you tell an adult to get someone help. The five instances of reporting are if someone is: sick, hurt, breaking the law, doing something dangerous or you've already tried to solve the problem.
At Home: You can ask your students what are the five times that it's reporting, when you're telling an adult to get help for a person. You can find the tattling vs reporting song here:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1HiQp1i_DjYu62CethJ1iIXorJk1T6Vl5ECH5Gp5TFuY/edit
Third graders read the story "I Like Myself" and discussed self-esteem (how you feel about yourself). They discussed things they like about themselves on the inside and the outside. They then created "self-esteem shields" to show what they are good at, what makes them special and what makes them unique.
At Home: You can ask you third grader what makes them special and unique.
Fourth graders read "Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day" and practiced turning negative thinking into positive thinking. We also discussed the concept of being thankful and having an attitude of gratitude.
At Home: You can ask your fourth grader how they can take a negative and turn it into a positive one. Ask your student what they are grateful for. Can they name a person, place, and thing they are thankful for?
Fifth graders reviewed STAR problem solving and used the strategy to complete a team building game. The steps to STAR problem solving are:
Stop: What is the problem?
Think: What are my choices?
Act: Pick the choice you think is best.
Review: Did the choice work or do I need to try again?
At Home: You can ask your 5th grader to use STAR problem solving to solve a problem. You can watch an example of STAR problem solving here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHnHAIVqE4w
IMPACT- Smart or Gifted
As parents, we all want to believe our children are smart and stand out as a good student in class. To look like the “smart kid” in class, often the child has to put effort into his/her work. Hand writing is neat and assignments are handed in on time, or even before they are due. A smart student is a child who is successful in class and does not need outside help to be an achiever.
A gifted student does not always “look” smart. Instead, the gifted student may not have to put much effort into his/her work and may not do the work at all if he/she does not see a reason for doing it. Gifted students may not have patience with the repeated practice that is usually needed for the average student. A gifted student’s mind may be thinking so rapidly that handwriting is difficult to read which may cause the teacher not to realize what the student is actually able to do. Rarely do we see a gifted student that is good at everything. Usually he/she excels in a certain area like math or writing.
The surprising thing is that many gifted students need SUPPORT to be successful. If you feel your child is able to master the grade level curriculum without effort and needs more challenging work – talk to the classroom teacher. Ask for the teacher’s input as to how your child does at school. There is a big difference between a parent working one on one with a child and his/her learning within a large group of students; so you need the classroom teacher’s
perspective. If you both feel that your child needs more of a challenge, think about referring your child for IMPACT’s screening in the spring. Talk to the counselor or the student’s classroom teacher about the procedure to refer a student. The deadline for first through fifth grade student names from each elementary school counselor to be turned in to the IMPACT teachers will be January 25th.
School Hours
School starts at 9:00 AM.
School is dismissed at 4:03 PM.
Being here on time and being here every day is critical to your child's success. Please help your child do the very best they can each and every day!
