Poliomyelitis
A disease that results in paralysis and is spread virally.
Symptoms
Malaise, discomfort or uneasiness, headache, red throat, slight fever, sore throat, and vomiting.
Diagnosis
Stiffness, odd reflexes, trouble bending the neck.
Treatment
Antibiotics to treat urinary tract infections, which can be caused by polio; moist heat to reduce muscle pain and stop spasms; painkillers; and physical therapy.
Prognosis
If the brain and spinal chord are involved in the virus, major paralysis and gastrointestinal issues can result. Infection high in the spinal chord can cause breathing problems as well. Other complications could include heart failure, shock, and urinary tract infections.
Prevention / Risk Factors
Getting vaccine, steering clear of areas with polio outbreaks. / Not getting vaccine, staying near places with recent outbreaks.
