Top TEN (Traits Eagles Need)
Each month during the school year, Elm Street focuses on a specific character trait as part of our Top TEN (Traits Eagles Need).
January Trait
Perseverance - Not giving up even if something is difficult; to "hang in there" and keep trying even if you make mistakes
February Trait
Courage - How we cope with fears in the face of a challenge
Each classroom is represented by an Eagle of the Month, a student who regularly displays the character trait for the month in his or her interactions with others. Eagles are featured on the morning news broadcast, ESN (Elm Street News) during a viewing celebration for students and parents held on the last Friday of the month.
January's Eagle of the Month filming will take place with students at 7:35 a.m. on Thursday, January 24 in the Media Center. Families of recognized students are invited to join us on Friday, January 25 at 7:45 a.m. for the Eagle of the Month ESN Watch Party! Can't wait to celebrate our character!
Students, we are on the lookout for your perseverance and courage!

Does your child know his or her Lexile level? Does it matter?
Our 1st - 5th graders are taking the Star reading assessment again this month. This is a tool that helps us understand a child's reading level. Lexiles measure a student's reading ability and the complexity of reading materials. The Lexile® Framework for Reading is a scientific approach to measuring both reading ability and the text complexity of reading materials on the same developmental scale. Your child receives a Lexile reader measure from the Star test at school. If your child does not know his or her Lexile level, please check with the teacher. The "sweet spot" for reading materials is usually 100L below and 50L above your child's Lexile level. Students at Elm Street are not limited to reading books on the Lexile level but knowing your child's Lexile level can help you and your child find appropriately challenging books if you are having trouble finding some. Because Lexile measures are standardized, they also help us know how well students are likely to perform on Georgia Milestones Assessments in the spring. No matter your child's Lexile level, it is important to keep growing. The more you read together and the more you encourage your child to read at home (books, magazines, picture books, newspaper, cereal boxes, recipes, package labels, flyers or billboards, etc.), the better your child will be able to read. Please remember that Elm Street is fortunate to have a lending library on the sidewalk outside past the front drive and we have book baskets in the hallways throughout the building. Remember to ask your child about his reading level and if he or she is growing! Here is a link for more information about Lexiles and how to best use the information.

Celebrate Progress and Set Goals
Report Cards were issued Wednesday, January 9. Be sure you check your child's report card. We encourage you to celebrate your child's growth and achievement. This is also a natural time to set goals for continued growth and improvement.
Did you know there are materials in our Parent Resource Center to help you support your child's development of key reading or math skills? The center is located in the foyer by Mrs. Pope's office and materials are free for any parents or students to take home to borrow.
We are your partners in learning. Please call us to conference anytime you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress. Every learner matters!
