A very special THANK YOU to Mrs. Jen Schutte for doing all of the behind the scenes work required to have a Spelling Bee. Also, thank you to the judges: Mrs. Nichole Riehle, Mrs. Leigh Hochgesang, and Mrs. Alison Lindauer. And last, but not least, thank you to our pronouncer, Mrs. Shannon Fuhs.

News from Mrs. Durcholz's Room
After her demonstrations, students were then given the opportunity to practice what they had been taught. Shown below are some of Mrs. Durcholz's classes practicing what they learned. We can all breathe a little easier knowing that these students would know what to do in an emergency! At least we hope they do.
The CPR and AED curriculum must be developed by a provider using nationally recognized and evidence based guidelines and must include a psychomotor (hands on) component.
Cyber Bullying and Security
On Thursday, December 6, Ms. Amanda Giddings, ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) Youth Educator with the Indiana State Police, delivered a Cyer Bullying presentation to the students of Southridge Middle School.
Below I have posted photos of the six brochures that pertain to the topics discussed in the presentation: Cyberbullying, Have the Talk, Secret Apps, Sexting, Sextortion, and Social Media. For additional information, contact any of the links provided on the brochures.
Ms. Giddings would like to emphasize to parents that these are issues impacting their children. It does not matter where kids are, or how well-behaved they are perceived to be -- if they are accessing the internet, these issues will come up. It is important for parents to discuss these topics routinely. Have a weekly or biweekly chat with your child, or children, about what they are doing online. Go through your child's devices but not at the same time every week. Use parental controls to limit downloading. And, BE VIGILANT --educate yourselves on the latest apps and trends.
Winter Dance Preparations
On Wednesday of "The Dance" week, Mr. Baseden carried in buckets of red and white roses which were then made into corsages for some lucky girls to wear. After school that day, Mr. Baseden put on his florist's hat and along with the Student Council members, created these beautiful floral masterpieces. The first couple of corsages were not as perfect as the Student Council members may have wanted. But practice makes perfect! And the results of their handiwork can be seen below. Thank you, Mr. Baseden and crew!!!
The FOR Club asked for donations of gently used dresses that were no longer worn or needed. Approximately 20 dresses were turned into Mr. Doug Collins who then made them available to any girl in need of a something special to wear to the dance.
A very special shout out to this group for their awareness of the needs of others.
A very special THANK YOU is extended to Ms. Tiffany Neuhoff, Mrs. Kate LeMar, Mrs. Breanne Rainey, Mrs. Erin Marshall, and Ms. Kendra Kern for sharing their time and talents with these girls. These teachers helped make this a truly magical evening for our students.
Behavior Bash
Those students who met the criteria were given tickets to attend one of the following: a movie with popcorn in the auditorium. swimming, basketball in the middle school gym, free play in the high school gym, or a Fortnite tourney in the choir room.
Thanks to Mrs. Katy Beck for supplying the pictures below from each of the activity areas.

And the W-I-N-N-E-R is......
Suddenly Mrs. Schutte walked to the microphone and asked for everyone to get quiet. And with that, the 2018 Annual Southridge Middle School Spelling Bee was underway. All of the participants began with what were called the "easy" words. That's easy to say if you're not the one standing on stage being asked to spell a word in front of everyone!
As the words got harder, the mistakes came more frequently. Round 5 proved to be the round that dropped the number down to the final two.
Congratulations to Macaila Wilkens, Southridge Middle School's 2018 Spelling Bee Champion!!!
Keilah gave it her all, but in the end there could be only one winner. Congratulations to Keilah who is our Runner-Up this year.
Pictures from the Elves
Under the guidance of the seventh grade teachers, these students spent time with the residents as sang Christmas carols and delivered gifts. This annual excursion is a way of letting our students spend time with those who don't always have family nearby.
As the photos below show, the students enjoyed themselves along with the residents.
