Tapping into Talent
FMS students AND teachers at their best every day!
Why are student led conferences important?
Why Celebrations of Learning are Important
"Any time you make the work public, set the bar high, and are transparent about the steps to make a high-quality product, kids will deliver." -Mike McCarthy, principal, King Middle School, Portland, Maine
The power of Authentic Learning
Our FBLA chapter isn't just lip service. In fact it has been recognized as the largest in the nation! However, bigger isn't what makes it better....it's what is really happening that matters! One student, Martha Berry, selected the Humane Society's need for supplies as her service project for the state leadership conference. Our FBLA chapter arranged a field trip tour of the Humane Society so that every club member could experience the need Martha had identified first hand, and could help relay the importance of donating supplies for her project.
This is a valuable experience for Martha, as well as all other FBLA members. As Jim Knight says in High Impact Instruction, "I want youth to know they count for something and they can contribute. And that by contributing, that is where maximum joy is felt while you are here. It is not about amassing anything materially; it's about making a difference for people and other important things on this planet. When you are young it is so easy to go back to that place that you already know as a toddler, and that is where maximum joy is derived. If more youth are in that place, they will have a greater impact and live much more successful lives, the best definition of success, while they are here..." p.225.
Another class during the day is our Digital Media class, which is a news broadcast that is entirely written, produced, and directed by our students. What a powerful contribution and real world experience for these students every day.
None of this would be possible without teachers who love learning AND students!
Our FLCN (Falcon Learning Conversations Network) is our district's own professional development for all our teachers. We learn and grow together, and the reward shows in the work we do with our students.
