Assistant Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
It was our pleasure to host the first book club with students this afternoon in the library. We were completely blown away by the students who participated. They were prepared and had a lot to say about the book . It was obvious our teachers are working to deepen students' understanding of text. Their comments were insightful and well reasoned. What amazing readers we have at Oak Hills! Our next book will be Nightbird by Alice Hoffman. The book club date will be November 2nd. We look forward to spending more time learning about our students as readers.
We are extremely excited about our first parent workshop on Tuesday, September 25th from 8-9 am. It will be held in our new green room. What is a green room? Come and listen to our counselor and our Student Success Coach teach you about regulation strategies in the actual room where many of our students come to learn about social/emotional well being. In this room, they learn how to get themselves into the "green zone" when their emotions are big. It's nice to be able to use the same language at home that we use at school to talk to students about regulating their emotions. Learn some of the actual tips and strategies we use when we work with your children here at school during counseling lessons and at our monthly assemblies.
Finally, we'd like to introduce our new first grade teacher, Victoria Henry. She is a native of Beaverton and graduated from Beaverton High School. She did her student teaching at Sexton Mountain and the principal there gave her a glowing review. She has experience with the Units of Study we use for reading and writing, so she is ready to hit the ground running. We are so excited to have her join our team, and we know the students in her class are very lucky to have her.
Warm regards,
Jennifer DeMartino

Career Fair Volunteers Needed!
Oak Hills will hold its annual Career Fair on November 13th, from 8:15-10:30 a.m.! This will be a great opportunity to highlight a diverse group of careers our students might wish to pursue as important future members of the workforce and global community! We are looking for presenters who are willing and excited to give a presentation about the jobs they do. Groups of students will rotate through your station approximately 8 times, during which you will give a 10 minute presentation to each group.
Some of the questions presenters have used to guide presentations are:
Where do you work?
What is your job title?
What do you?
What did you have to do to prepare for a job in your field? (Post-high school)
How has the shift in technology impacted your job?
How do you impact the community?
How is your job interconnected with other jobs?
If you are interested in participating in this informative and engaging day, and helping prepare our students for college and career readiness, please email our School Counselor, Shelly Ray, at Shelly_Ray@Beaverton.k12.or.us with the Subject: Career Fair Volunteer+Your Name.

Attendance
When it comes to attendance, every day matters. According to the Oregon Department of Education, more than one in six students in chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism means a student misses 10% or more school days. That’s about two days per month.
Regular attendance will help children do well in elementary school, secondary school, college and at work. According to the Attendance Works Organization, by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of school. By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
Attendance habits are set the very first week of the school year, so please start building good attendance habits early. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session. It is also important to be on time. Students are often scared and embarrassed to walk in late. Plan to leave 5 minutes earlier than normal to ensure on-time arrival. We will be sharing more helpful tips and information throughout the school year.
Summer Reading
The Washington County Library branches will also sponsor reading incentives over winter break. Be sure to check it out!
TAG Referral
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office. Completing this form gives our school TAG committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of its completion.
Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
The Parent Information Form must be completed and returned to our school’s TAG facilitators, Polly Selby or Jennifer Fipps, or the school’s office by October 31.
