Monthly SEL Theme for the Month of November: HIGH EXPECTATIONS (GOAL SETTING)
High expectations involve believing that others can be successful, telling them so, and praising their accomplishments. Letting others know that you expect them to do well and congratulation them on a job well done.
This powerful skill is the ability to affirm others by looking for and finding food in people. It means building others up and encouraging them. It means finding reasons for praise and applause. It means nurturing and being supportive, and reinforcing what others do well. Most of all, it means giving people reasons to celebrate.
(Hal Urban, pg. 87) - In order to create these expectations, you need to create a sense of cooperation in all your undertakings. Before criticizing a teammate, walk a mile in his or her shoes.
Be BRAVE enough to be KIND and Have the Courage to Care!
So Proud of Gabriella Gibbs participating as the key note speaker in the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Legislative Breakfast.

Classroom News!
TEAM 6A:
Thanks to all of the parents who came out to share, play and learn about the Growth Mindset. We loved having parents as our Jenga game partners, what a treat! The students of Team6A have just completed their first novel, The Girl Who Owned a City. As a culminating activity the students will be creating a Newscast focusing on a pivotal event in the story. In math students have learned how to multiply and divide decimals and fractions. In Science students have discovered so many things, including how to measure metrically. They will participate in the Metric Olympics soon!
Team 6B:
Using the Scientific Method, Team 6B scientists explored how bubbles reacted to being touched by different objects. Ask your child about his or her results. The best part was that during our second round of trials, we changed something that made our exploration even more exciting. Your scientist can tell you all about what we discovered, and what we might want to try next time.
Team 6C:
Students on team 6c have been studying the cave art of early man. We worked with the art teacher to create replica's of cave paintings and discuss why certain animals and symbols may have been used in cave paintings. In ELA, students are working in Literature Circle groups to read a variety of different books in class. We are still visiting the library each month to select free choice books in both the fiction and non-fiction genre. Math class is focusing on the decimal skills. In Science class we are working on the metric system, mass, weight, observation, inferences and using tools safely in the lab.
Team 6D:
Team 6D has been busy testing the scientific method using our measurement skills! We have learned to find length mass and volume in the metric system using tools such as the triple beam balance, and completed a choice board project to showcase what we have learned. From graphic novels to poems to live experiments, we had a great time choosing our path to mastery!!
Team 6E:
Team 6E wanted to take a moment and thank everyone who came to our open house. Students are working on developing a growth mindset. We want our students to embrace the idea that every mistake they make is progress. After all, you have only failed if you have given up. Until then . . . it’s learning. Through effort, the right strategies and getting help from others, everyone can achieve. For a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out and everything changes. To someone who doesn’t understand growth, it would look like complete destruction. Let us all embrace a growth mindset in our daily lives!
Team 7A:
Team 7A students conducted an open inquiry based STEAM investigation on constructing a microscope. The students were given hand lenses, construction paper, and masking tape and asked to create a compound microscope. They learned the fundamentals of how microscopes work and the results were both creative and unique.
TEAM 7B:
Students began their unit on cells by learning to use microscopes. They observed prepared slides, such as computer chips, hair, newsprint, and blood samples. Eventually, they demonstrated mastery by preparing fresh, wet-mount slides of pond water, cheek cells, onion and tomato skin.
Team 7C:
National History Day (NHD) research has begun and we are loving it! Starting out the project, we discussed this year’s theme of “Breaking Barriers,” recognizing how people and historical events have broken the barrier in history. Team 7C dove into looking up topics and are excited for the projects ahead. As a team we have visited the library to learn about the various platforms available to conduct our research from links on the JMS Library website, databases, E-Books, print books, and so much more!
Team 8A, 8B, 8C:
On Thursday, October 10, the 8th grade traveled to Washington, D.C. for the annual trip to our nation's capital. While studying the Reconstruction period, students had the opportunity to visit some of America's most revered monuments and museums that commemorate and celebrate America's continued pursuit of freedom and justice.

November: Happiness Strengthens your Immune System
Have you ever thought about how your emotions and life perspective effects your health?
Happiness and health go hand in hand. It works both ways. Stress, depression and sadness can negatively affect your health, but happiness, joy and a positive attitude definitely improve healing and strengthen your immune system.
I bet I would get your attention if I told you there is a simple, free, and organic way to strengthen your immune system. That there is a way to possibly reduce the likelihood of catching a cold, catching the flu and even other more serious diseases. That even if you do get sick, the duration and severity of the illness may be reduced. Have I peeked your curiosity? The answer is happiness.
A study of undergraduates who were exposed to the rhinovirus ( the common cold),showed those who considered themselves to be happy, positive people were less likely to catch the cold, had less severe symptoms and recovered faster. The same study was repeated using the influenza virus, with the same results. Of course even happiness has it’s limitations in terms of protecting your immune system, but it’s a wonderful tool in the fight against disease.
There is power in happiness and positivity, and it can be contagious in so many ways. When you seek out happy moments and share them with others, your heart rate improves, your mental health improves and you feel better emotionally and physically. Laugh, dance, play and you’ll find why so many researchers are discovering that the secret to longevity may be found not just in medical science, but in happiness too.
When we see our newborn baby for the first time, it’s like looking a clean slate. We see all the hopes and dreams we have for this precious child. We see all the things we will teach this beautiful child about life’s journey. Do we ever stop and think about how important it is to teach our child how to be a happy person? If children grow up in a home filled with laughter and joy they will learn to have a positive outlook on life. One of the best things we can do to foster a happy outlook in our children , is to model that behavior in our homes.
Next month we will talk about how happiness combats stress.
