A message from the Principal-Mrs. Bookman
To our Suffield Family,
It was a lovely day for a Veteran's Day parade! We were pleased to be able to get outside and celebrate the Veterans of our community.
We have also concluded a very fun week of Kindness. We hope that this week's focus drives us all to keep KINDNESS in mind! Everyone in the world is stressed, busy, and short-staffed. Practice acts of kindness in your homes by challenging your children to do random acts of kindness for their siblings, grandparents, parents, neighbors, etc. Remembering kindness in all we do goes so far!
Next week the weather is taking a big change....please be sure to send your child to school with a warm coat, hat, and gloves. If you are in need of any of these items for your child, please let me know!
Finally, the holidays are quickly approaching. If you have a need, please let me know ASAP. Our time frames are short and we want to be sure we can assist anyone who needs the help!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Bookman

World Kindness Day - Saturday, November 13th
Bring kindness to your life by celebrating World Kindness Day on Saturday, November 13th.
To help bring kindness into the world, we need to first bring kindness into our daily life.
Try these 5 tips as a first step in daily kindness:
1. Send a "just because" text to someone in your life.
2. Wave on that person trying to switch lanes with a smile.
3. Share a compliment with a co-worker or friend.
4. Treat someone (friend or even stranger) to a cup of coffee.
5. Try to find a way to make at least one person smile every day.

A note from the Ohio Department of Health
The Ohio Department of Health has asked schools to share this information with families:
As you know, the COVID-19 vaccination is a key to keeping Ohio’s students in the classroom, and that’s why the Ohio Department of Health has launched Ohio Vax-2-School. Ohioans between the ages of 12 and 25 who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination have the chance to win one of 150 $10,000 scholarships and one of five $100,000 scholarships to an Ohio college or university for career or technical education. The entry period is open now. To learn more about this initiative or to submit an entry, visit ohiovax2school.com or call 1-833-4-ASK-ODH.

Birthday Treats-MUST be prepackaged, ONLY
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.
Ohio's Parent Mentor Program

Counselor's Corner- A Note From Miss Livers
Coping with Emotions
While students are ultimately responsible for the choices they make, there are things that you can do as a parent or guardian to support your student as they work on self-regulation. One of the first steps for self-regulation is to consider what your child is communicating through his/her emotions. For example, anger can often be a manifestation of other feelings like disappointment, sadness, or frustration. By getting to the bottom of the anger, you will be able to better help your child work through it. Another important part of self-regulation is helping your child learn and work on coping strategies they can use to help with the anger they are feeling. The more you practice the coping skills with your student when they are not upset the easier it will be for them to use when they are. When you see your child using their coping skills, or at least attempting to, praise them! Let them know that their efforts have not gone unseen and that you are proud of the work they have done.
Below is a sample list of possible coping skills to help your child when they are upset.
Practicing deep breathing
Yoga
Exercise
Listening to music
Singing/dancing to a favorite song
Drawing/Coloring/Painting
Reading a book
Taking a walk/break
Using a favorite fidget
Mindfulness
Practicing positive self-talk
Developing and using coping skills takes time and patience. We can't expect children to use these strategies effectively right away. It will take them some time to determine what works and what doesn't. Additionally, they may find that some coping strategies are more useful than others. Continue to empower them to choose and use what works best for them.

Crayola and schools across North America have banded together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. Suffield Elementary will now take part in recycling markers that no longer work. It’s a super easy project to help our environment! You can send in any brand of markers, sharpies, dry erase, and highlighters. Once we collect the markers, they will be shipped to a facility that repurposes them so that they are kept out of the landfills.
