Week of January 8, 2023

Big picture

Principal's Message

Dear Webster families,

Happy New Year to the entire Webster community. I hope that you were all able to relax and spend time with friends and family during the break.

I was fortunate to be able to see many of our students perform at the Patille Dance Studio Christmas Concert yesterday. It was a lovely way to celebrate Armenian Christmas and was a beautiful finale to the winter break.

We are very excited to start the TK-2nd grade theatre residency program beginning on January 16th. The artist's name is Lory Tatoulian. She is one of our exceptional theatre artists in residence. Each TK-K class will get 30 minutes a week for 6 weeks, and 1st and 2nd grade classes will get 45 minutes a week for 6 weeks. Lory also speaks Armenian and is open to integrating Armenian language and culture into the program.

On Thursday, our SSC will be meeting at 5:00pm.

Please note, we strongly recommend that students and staff use the COVID 19 testing kits on the evening of Sunday, January 8th or the morning of Monday, January 9th before they come back to school. Also, if your child is sick, they should stay home even if they test negative and to give us a call if they test positive.

Lastly, parents, please do not park in the staff parking lot at drop-off nor pick-up. This is a safety concern as well as matter of respect.

Visit the calendar on our website to see all activities and events scheduled:

Looking Ahead:

Healthy Return from Winter Break

To make sure everyone stays healthy and safe when classes resume after Winter Break, PUSD Health Programs strongly encourages all PUSD students and staff to test for COVID-19 the evening of Jan. 8, 2023 or the morning of Jan. 9, 2023 - before returning to school.

Win a Gift Card!

Students who test on either of those dates before the start of school can enter a special “Return to School” drawing and might win a $25 dollar gift card!

To enter the drawing:

  1. Take a COVID test using a PCR or rapid antigen test on the evening of Jan. 8, 2023 or the morning of Jan. 9, 2023 - before coming to school.

  2. After you test, click on the link below to enter the drawing.

The drawing closes at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023. PUSD Health Programs will contact winners by Friday, Jan. 13, 2023.

2022-23 Housing Survey

  • The pandemic has exacerbated inequities in our community. The state of California estimated a 48% increase in students experiencing homelessness over the last decade and recent legislation (AB-27) was passed to provide expanded services in partnership with schools and other public agencies.

In order to ensure that our students who are impacted by housing instability receive appropriate services to support their learning needs, Pasadena Unified is conducting an annual housing survey.

Please visit the survey to complete this confidential survey by January 30, 2023. If you require a paper survey or alternative accommodations, please contact your school site or Pasadena Unified Families in Transition Office at 750 N. Los Robles Ave. Pasadena, CA 91104.

Pasadena, CA 91104.

PUSD Student Quarantine Protocol

The shorter incubation period and increased transmissibility of recent COVID-19 variants suggest that a quicker and broader response to contact tracing for cases identified in school settings is warranted. The CDPH and PPHD are therefore encouraging schools to move away from the Individual Contact Tracing approach. PUSD will continue to follow the Group Contact Tracing protocol which will allow schools to provide safe in-person instruction without the intense demand of individual contact tracing.

As per Pasadena Public Health Department Exposure Management Plan dated August 15, 2022, a student who shared the same indoor airspace with someone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 (based on a positive viral COVID-19 test result or clinician diagnosis) while that person was infectious with COVID-19, for 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period is considered a potential close contact. Asymptomatic potential close contacts may remain at school if they follow these requirements:

(1) monitor for symptoms;

(2) wear a highly protective mask around others indoors, except when eating or drinking, for 10 days after the last date of exposure; 5 COVID-19 Safety Plan v8 Revised 10.21.22

(3) test with an FDAauthorized viral COVID-19 test (e.g., PCR or Antigen test, including at-home tests) within 3-5 days after the last date of exposure. Rapid antigen tests will be given to potential close contacts.

Please be sure to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws to and from school. Please do not make U-turns on Washington Blvd nor on Pepper Dr. It is especially unsafe at our parking lot exit.

Tax Deductible Giving through Webster's Annual Fund

Daniel Webster Elementary School has been honored as a California Distinguished School. Great teachers, strong leadership, and parent involvement make Daniel Webster a great school to send our children.

In addition to the great education our students receive, they are also provided with various opportunities to participate in our music and arts activities. We're asking for your support to continue this legacy by donating to the Daniel Webster Annual Fund and help us reach our goal of $50,000.

These funds will be used to financially support our music and arts programs, and to support the instructional goals set forth by the School Site Council
We would like to see every family donate at least $1.00 per week ($50 for the school year) for each child they have enrolled at Daniel Webster.

Think of it as donating less than the cost of a weekly cup of coffee or soft drink to help ensure that your child receives a high quality education.

If you can donate more, we would encourage you to donate towards our Giving Tree. We have various levels of donations:
Bronze - $100
Silver - $200
Gold - $300
VIP - $500 or more

If you are not able to contribute financially please consider donating your time and talents.
