MARINER MEMO
5/30 - 6/3/2022
PRINCIPAL'S NOTE
Dear Sehome Community,
This week, we celebrate our 7 Arts Week, Spirit Week, Whatcom Youth Pride Parade, and Prom. It is bound to be an incredible week filled with much celebration. It is also the last full week for our seniors! So much to celebrate and be thankful for.
Last week, we had our incoming 9th grade students on campus. They started their day watching Cinderella, had lunch together, played games with our Mariner Mentors, went on a tour of the building, and then we ended our time together with an assembly. It was so fun to have an in person visit and to feel the great energy from our future Mariners. We are excited to have them join the Sehome family next school year.
Tuesday, May 31st we have a PTSA meeting in the Sehome Library. Everyone is welcome to attend. We would love to see some new faces! If you have not had a chance to see the building or meet some other Sehome parents, this is a great opportunity to do that.
Please take a few moments to sit down with your child and review their grades on Skyward. We are in the home stretch, but there is still time to make adjustments if they are needed. Please encourage your child to reach out or email their teacher with any questions. Let's finish this year strong!
Know that I am thankful for each one of you. Reach out with questions, comments, or feedback.
Here's to another great week!
Sonia Cole
Principal

BLOCK PARTY GEAR SWAP
Jennifer Gaer is hard at work planning for the Back to School Block Party at BHS on August 20th 10am-2pm. One piece of the block party will be a gear swap. Starting later this month (after spring sports wrap up) we are hoping to put boxes in a spot in each school to collect gently used athletic equipment/gear. Many of our athletes and families struggle to outfit themselves for sports each year, and we see this as an opportunity to help our families get the gear they need before next year. Jennifer and I will be in touch with each MS and HS school individually to ensure we have this box in a spot that works for you all; we will drop it, pick it up, and hopefully not create any additional work. I will send advertisement info as we get closer to donation phase of this project.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES
ONLINE COURSES FOR SUMMER SCHOOL
Students in Bellingham Public Schools who will be in grades 9-12 in fall 2022 may take free online courses for summer school using the Edgenuity platform for credit retrieval or credit ahead.
Please note: students entering ninth grade are limited to Computer Applications and Health for credit ahead.
Summer school courses are accelerated, completing an 18-week class in a compressed 6-week time frame. For this reason, although the coursework is completed online, students need to attend in person at Options High School Monday through Thursday from June 27 to August 4, 2022. This ensures they have quick access to academic and/or technical help.
For more information about high school summer school through Edgenuity, please see the summer 2022 registration form. If you have additional questions, please contact your high school counselor or secondary summer school principal Ronni Weston via email or at 360-647-6871.
GET REGISTERED FOR SPORTS PLUS SPORTS PHYSICALS
- Families and students can get connected with middle school and high school sports for next year on finalforms now. Most families received email communication about this through school messenger, but a number of our emails don’t work and a few students who haven't been assigned a school next year didn’t hear about registering for sports/clubs for next year. Please share this information with families:
- Sign up for athletics and activities for the 2022-2023 school year now!
- To get signed up and learn more, head to our school's activity and athletics site: https://sehome.bellinghamschools.org/activities/
- If your student is interested in participating, sign up now to learn about camps, workouts, and connection opportunities over the summer.
- All students interested in participating in a sport, need a valid sports physical. Make an appointment with your primary care provider for a well child check, and ask for a sports physical to ensure your student athlete can start right away next year.

HIGH SCHOOL & BEYOND PLAN
Monday, May 16th Juniors were handed their High School and Beyond Plan report so they could see what activities they need to complete and to give them designated time to work on them.
The goal is to get our Juniors to check off as many of these requirements as they can before their Senior Meeting with their counselor in the fall.
A video with a helpful tutorial was emailed to each student to guide them through the completion of each activity which includes:
Career Surveys (3 different ones: Preferences, Interests, Skills) Career Research (research and favorite a couple careers), enter career and educational goals, read a section on financial aid, complete and upload a résumé (academic or job).
Please encourage your Junior to complete these. Additional help or copies of their report are available from Martha Zender in the Career Center. Running Start students, with no classes at Sehome, will be given their report when they come in for their fall EVF this spring.
High School & Beyond Plan
The High School & Beyond Plan, a graduation requirement, helps students get the most out of high school and think about their future. Students work with school counselors and advisors to create their own individual plan, the “personalized pathway", throughout high school and revise their plan annually to accommodate changing interests or postsecondary goals on what they expect to do the year following graduation from high school.
The postsecondary aspirations may include pathways for application to four-year colleges or universities, two-year community or technical colleges, apprenticeship programs, industry standard certificate programs, military training, or on-the-job training.

6 - TRAFFIC SAFETY THROUGH SHS
Do you have a 15-year-old or soon-to-be 15-year old that is interested in driving

They can take Traffic Safety Education (TSE) through the school. Classes will start September 2022 and February 2023. The only requirements are that (1) your student is 15 before the first day of class and (2) to add TSE to course registration happening now.

To get a license, they will still need to complete TSE or wait until they are 18 years old.
The knowledge test is offered for free. To sign up, use this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/stateknowledgetesting

10 - EMERGENCY AND WEATHER PROCEDURES
Emergency and Weather Procedures
It’s that time of year to think about snow and our procedures and impact of weather-related school cancellations.
Depending on conditions (which could include snow, flooding, power outages, etc.), school could:
- close for the day (in the case of widespread power outages),
- open two hours late with regular bus routes or snow bus routes,
- open on time with snow bus routes.
How can I get weather/emergency information?
Changes to the school schedule are usually announced by 6 a.m., and we use a variety of methods to keep families informed:
- Sign up for alerts: To receive email, phone, and/or text alerts, set your communication preferences on the Skylert tab within Skyward Family Access. (Need help? go here for step-by-step directions or contact 360-676-6520.)
- Tune to local media: 790 AM, 96.5 FM, 104.1 FM or Seattle media.
- Check bellinghamschools.org
- Check @BhamSD on Twitter, @bellinghamschools on Facebook and @bellinghamschools on Instagram
- Call 360-676-6400 for a recorded message.
- Call 360-647-6815 for a message translated in Español, русский, tính từ and Punjabi.
Please familiarize yourself with our weather procedures at bellinghamschools.org/weather.

11 - MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
When a student requires medication at school, either prescription or over the counter (OTC), parents/guardians must return a completed medication authorization form with directions from a licensed health care provider (LHCP) to Sehome. One exception is that certain OTC medications that are self-administered do not require LHCP instructions, but they do require a parent/guardian to complete the medication authorization form. There is no situation that a student taking medications at school does not need a medication authorization on file.
The privilege of students self-caring their medications, whether prescription or OTC, requires students to take their medication as instructed on the authorization and being aware that they may not share their medications with anyone. Medications brought to school must be in the original prescription container or manufacturers labelled OTC container. Medication authorizations expire at the end of the current school year, or sooner as per LHCP instructions.
Link to Medication Authorization Form can be found here
