self contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba)

Who invented it?

Scuba is a 1943 invention by the Frenchmen Émile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

What is it?

Scuba is a tank that has compressed air inside of it. The tank gets strapped onto your back when you dive there is a tube that connects to the mouth piece. It is different from other modes of diving. Scuba is different because instead of having to hold your breath or on air pumped from the surface, scuba divers carry their own source of air, allowing them more movement than with an air line.

How did it change ocean exploration?

  • A tank of compressed air, a dive regulator that supplies air to you, and a BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) that lets you float or descend when you need to. Some scuba suits are made of different weathers or environments too. Some scuba suits are made for cooler places which help to insulate body heat, where others are made for warm weathers which are made of a light breathable fabric.
