DREAM CENTER ACADEMY UPDATE
The Shoals Dream Center currently has 22 students enrolled in their Dream Center Academy. Fourteen of those students attend Underwood Elementary, and the remaining 8 students are 4th graders who attend Harlan Elementary.
This year, they are partnering with Mrs. McGill’s UNA evaluation students, Dr. Becky Smith’s UNA Math students, and Dr. Douglas Brown’s UNA social work class. They also welcomed Sherrie Anderson to their DCA team to assist in overseeing the interns and students. Mrs. Anderson is a retired middle school teacher from Franklin, Tennessee. They are excited to see this group grow academically and even more excited to see their confidence grow throughout the semester.
If you would like to volunteer or get connected to DCA you can email Toyia at tgourley@wearechapel.org to find out more information!
LIFE AT LOCK SIX
Those who have read Muscle Shoals Canal…Life With the Canalers know it as an interesting, delightful book. Published first in 1978, with a follow-up edition in 1981, its author, the late Joshua Nicholas (“Nick”) Winn III, a long-time, beloved professor in the English Department at UNA, tells the story of his growing-up years as the oldest of four children whose father was second in command of the operations at Lock Six on the Muscle Shoals Canal. (The family actually lived at Lock Six.) Complete with vintage photographs of various aspects of life at the Lock, the book includes visits by such nationally-known figures as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Margaret Wilson (daughter of President Woodrow Wilson), and one of the Mayo brothers from the famous Mayo Clinic. It also includes the memory – quite painful for the author – of his childhood home and all surrounding spaces being flooded in 1924 to set the stage for the grand opening of Wilson Dam. For anyone interested in local history, Muscle Shoals Canal…Life With the Canalers is an engrossing read.
