News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

For the second year in a row, March has come in like a lion. While the weather has been calm, the world continues to be unsettled.

One year ago today COVID-19 was labeled a pandemic, and in school districts across the country, we were envisioning what implications this would have on teaching and learning. The planning was for the near-term. Little did we know. One year ago we dismissed students from whole-class, unmasked learning for the last time.

We hadn't yet met Google Meet. The only Zooming we did was along 128. The prospect of making it down 117 in rush hour in less than 15 minutes would be laughed at. We just concluded our annual HOP BINGO Night, and final preparations were underway for field trips to local museums.

One year later, we are scurrying about again, but this time, it is in anticipation of returning our students to learning full-time in school.

There has been so much information that has come your way, I will try not to repeat anything, but rather invite you to access and review the information that has been released by the district:

As planning and preparation at Haynes and across Sudbury continues in earnest. I am happy to share a few updates:

  • Yesterday was the deadline to submit learning model selections for your child(ren). With this data, we are now able to make concrete plans for our students.
  • Many of our educators have received their vaccinations, or are scheduled to in the coming weeks. I am grateful to the state for prioritizing our educators.
  • On April 5, students will resume attending specials classes in person.
  • In-person learning will take place with a minimum of three-feet between students. Students will be masked at all times while at this distance.
  • All eating will take place with students at least six-feet between one another, either in the cafeteria, gym or outside. All mask breaks will take place outdoors.
  • The state has pushed back the spring MCAS testing window to begin May 5. Details to come on specific testing dates for students in grades 3-5.
  • Information on bus availability will be released shortly. I anticipate making some adjustments to our arrival/dismissal process, and may request families share with us updated dismissal plans to assist with our planning.
  • April 1 will be a no school day to allow our staff to focus on preparations ahead of our full in-person return on Monday, April 5.

I will share news as decisions are make and updates are available, and will share a comprehensive update ahead of our April 5 return.

As we mark one year since we closed our buildings, adjusted our lives and changed school as we knew it forever, I look forward to our return to normal--which will decidedly be an incremental process over the coming weeks and months. There has been much lost, and we'll move forward and find our way together. At the same time, we have much to celebrate and look forward to ahead. We are stronger and smarter, and our kids today and in the years to come will benefit.

Sincerely,

Jeff LaBroad

Principal
