Encouraging Healthy Screen Time and Safe Online Practices for Our Young Learners
As we navigate the challenges of the digital age, it becomes increasingly important for us to foster healthy screen time habits and ensure the safety of our young learners in online environments.
We understand the integral role technology plays in education, especially with the prevalence of virtual learning and digital tools. However, it's critically important to strike a balance and encourage our children to limit their screen time outside of educational activities. Excessive screen time has been linked to various health concerns, including eye strain, disrupted sleep patterns, and potential negative impacts on mental well-being.
Additionally, we want to highlight the importance of safe practices in group chats and video calls. As our children engage in virtual social interactions, it's essential to educate them about responsible and respectful behavior online. Encourage them to be mindful of their words and actions, just as they would in face-to-face interactions.
Here are a few tips to promote healthy screen time and safe online practices:
Establish Screen Time Limits: Set reasonable limits on non-educational screen time to ensure a healthy balance between online and offline activities.
Supervise Online Interactions: Keep an eye on your child's online interactions, especially in group chats and video calls. Remind them to communicate respectfully and report any inappropriate behavior.
Know What Your Child is Consuming: Just as you monitor your child's physical diet, it is important to manage your child's digital consumption as well. Endless YouTube scrolling, excessive video gaming, and social media addiction can disrupt your child's social, emotional, and academic development. Set clear boundaries for these platforms and enforce them.
Educate on Cybersecurity: Teach your child about the importance of keeping personal information private and the potential risks of sharing sensitive details online.
Encourage Breaks: Encourage short breaks between online activities to reduce eye strain and promote physical activity.
Model Healthy Behavior: Children often learn by example. Demonstrate healthy screen time habits and responsible online behavior in your own interactions.
By working together, we can create a supportive and safe digital environment for our young learners. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to the well-being of our students.
Warmly,
Mr. Lynch

STEAM Update
We had another fun week making Fluffy Cloud Slime, and like all scientists, learned something new. Old glue does not work! To make slime effectively you need new glue! Here’s the recipe if you want to try it at home:
FLUFFY CLOUD SLIME
1. Add 1/4 cup glue and 1/4 cup shaving cream to bowl and stir gently or will be less fluffy!
2. Add 1/8 cup starch and stir gently
3. Let sit for 5 minutes
4. Re-evaluate---If too sticky add more starch -- If too stiff add shaving cream
5. Knead for 3-4 more minutes
For our next activity, we will be talking about animal adaptations and making mini “shelters” for hibernating animals. As always, thank you for the donations!
STEAM Wishlist:
- sandwich and quart size ziplock bags
- big jugs of white Elmers’s glue
- tinfoil
- paper plates
- cotton balls
- different types of “insulation” scraps such as flannel, fleece, foam, and wool
- mini cups
- scotch tape
- Playdough
- pennies
- biodegradable packing “popcorn”

CVUSD Invention Convention
All 3rd-5th grade students are invited to participate in CVUSD’s sixth Invention Convention sponsored by Student Support Services. Invention Convention is a showcase where students display inventions that they have created. Students may work alone or in a group of 2-4 students to identify a problem to solve, come up with a solution that can be invented, create the invention and then share it at a convention. This is a great opportunity for students who are creative, curious, who enjoy tinkering and innovating, and who are adept at solving problems!
If interested, plan on attending the Parent/Student Informational Meeting at University Center (2801 Atlas Ave.) on January 31 from 6-7pm.
