CPR For Kids

Call 911

  • If child is unresponsive
  • Cause is unclear (ie. not consciously choking)
  • To obtain consent to give care

Check For Breathing

  • Take no more than 10 seconds
  • Infants have periodic breathing, so changes in pattern are normal
  • Irregular breathing is not considered breathing

Rescue Breaths

  • Skip this step if the child collapses suddenly
  • For children, pinch nose shut with fingers and create seal over mouth
  • For infants, create seal over nose and mouth

Conscious Choking

  • Give 5 back blows between shoulder blades with heel of palm
  • Give 5 abdominal thrusts (sharp, upwards movements)
  • Repeat sets

Chest Compressions

  • For infants, push about 1 1/2 inches deep
  • For children, push about 2 inches deep
