CPR For Kids
Call 911
- If child is unresponsive
- Cause is unclear (ie. not consciously choking)
- To obtain consent to give care
Check For Breathing
- Take no more than 10 seconds
- Infants have periodic breathing, so changes in pattern are normal
- Irregular breathing is not considered breathing
Rescue Breaths
- Skip this step if the child collapses suddenly
- For children, pinch nose shut with fingers and create seal over mouth
- For infants, create seal over nose and mouth
Conscious Choking
- Give 5 back blows between shoulder blades with heel of palm
- Give 5 abdominal thrusts (sharp, upwards movements)
- Repeat sets
Chest Compressions
- For infants, push about 1 1/2 inches deep
- For children, push about 2 inches deep
