NEWS FROM GUIDANCE
Program Planning: Counselors continue to meet individually with students, to review course selections, graduation credit, and answer any questions. On Monday, March 13, Verification Sheets will become available to print/view through the Portal. If students wish to make any changes to their course selections, they may make the changes on the Verification Form and return to the Guidance Office by Wednesday, March 15th. Students do not need to return the Verification Sheets unless they are making a change to their listed course requests. No changes to course requests will be made after March 21st, unless the change complies with the Course Change Policy (i.e., student does not meet the prerequisite, or has a teacher recommendation for a level change).
AP Exam Registration: Students may register for AP Exams now through Friday, March 17th. Please visit www.MyPaymentsPlus.com, where you will be able to view all available exams and registration dates, and make AP Exam payments for all students in the same household in one transaction.
- New this year – PRE-ADMINISTRATION. Every student who registers for an AP Exam this year will participate in a Pre-administration Session on Wednesday, April 19th during an Extended Advisory. During this session, all students will “bubble in” demographic information required of all test-takers. Doing this prior to the students’ first AP test this year will reduce the amount of time students must spend in the testing room, and hopefully will alleviate unnecessary stress. Attendance at the Pre-administration Session is mandatory for all test-takers.
CB College Fair: The College Fair will take place on Wednesday, March 22nd at 6:30 pm at CB South (1100 Folly Road, Warrington). Admission representatives from over 120 colleges, universities, trade schools, and military organizations will be in attendance. This is a great opportunity to learn about colleges and their programs, majors, student life, and financial aid. Juniors are highly encouraged to attend!
Drug Addiction Assembly for Sophomores – March 8th: The Guidance Department has partnered with the CBW Intervention Club to promote a new, three-year cyclical program to inform and educate students about drug addiction and prevention. Starting with the Class of 2019, students will experience a different assembly or activity each year through their Senior year. The focus will be on educating students about what opiates are, how easily one may become addicted (for example, after being prescribed pain medication after surgery), the physical and psychological impact on the body, how to recognize addiction and/or dangerous substance-abuse habits in their own friends or loved ones, and the impact of addiction on families, friends, and communities.
On Wednesday, March 8th, the Sophomore Class is invited to attend an assembly featuring members of D.A.V.E. (Drug Addiction oVerdose Education), including founder Cathy Messina whose son Dave lost his life to an overdose. Presenters will include Mrs. Messina, Dave’s brother James, and a counselor from a drug rehabilitation center who helps families to recover and heal. This assembly is not in the format of a “scared straight” presentation, but rather focuses on educating and informing students about the harsh realities of drugs (opiates in particular), and giving students some guidance for how to best help a friend or loved one who may be in trouble. If you do not want your child to attend this assembly, please contact your child’s guidance counselor.
HANG UP AND DRIVE ASSEMBLY
On Monday March 27, Juniors and Seniors will participate in the “Hang Up and Drive” assembly. The purpose of the assembly is to raise awareness about the issue of distracted driving. In addition to addressing texting and driving, the assembly is directly related to good decision making, personal responsibility, and concern for others. This assembly is funded through a CB Cares grant. In addition to the assembly, students will engage in small group discussions about the topic in their advisory classes.
