January 2018
Message from the Principal
Best wishes for a wonderful 2018! Each year that goes by seems to go faster than the one before and this school year has been no exception.
January brings a fresh start for each of us and is a time to set goals and prioritize for the year. We are no different at school. We look forward to conferences and the second session of our afterschool program. Please visit with your child’s teacher for more information. We are also now into the long stretch before state assessments begin and it is during this time we see the most growth from students. Ask any Kindergarten teacher in March and they can tell you how exciting it is to see their students blossoming into readers, writers, and mathematicians. We’re almost half way there. Batten down the hatches for more crazy winter weather, read some new books, and stop by to see the great things happening at Wilson. Go Wildcats!

Head Lice
- Head lice is a common nuisance for school children and their families that can be spread when there is close head-to-head contact.
What are head lice?
- Lice are tiny, wingless insects that live close to the scalp and feed on human blood. They lay eggs, called nits, which are glued to the hair shaft. Lice are typically spread from head-to-head contact. It is also possible, but uncommon, to spread head lice by contact with clothing or other personal items. Lice do not hop, jump or fly. They crawl. They do not spread disease and are not dangerous. Infestations are not related to cleanliness. In fact, lice often infest people with good hygiene and grooming habits!
Tips to prevent head lice
- Encourage girls with long hair to wear it up in ponytails. Encourage your child(ren) to avoid sharing items such as hats, combs, towels and pillows/bedding at slumber parties. Checking your child's head weekly is also a good practice.
Other information
- If live lice are found, the student will be sent home. They will need to be treated and checked by the nurse. There are many treatment options available. Speaking with your family physician or health office nurse can help you determine which is best for you. Communicate with your health office nurse. If you find your child has head lice, please alert the school health service office. Combing the eggs is an important step that often gets missed. This involved manually checking each strand of hair and removing all nits.
