McKay High School Weekly Newsletter
Week of February 13 -- 17
Message from the Admin Team
Community is defined as a group of people with a common characteristics or interests living together within a larger society. For those of you that take time out of your day or week to read our weekly newsletter, we would like to recognize the important role that you play within this community. We see McKay High School as a center of our East Salem neighborhood, this means that we all should take part in the celebrations, in and around the community. This also means that when challenges arise within our school we will need the community to show patience and grace towards parents, staff, and students alike. We are continuing to seek community partners who are willing to join us in conversations around what we are doing well, and what we could be doing better. Therefore we invite any of you to join us in our work. If you are interested in holding these conversations, please reach out to our Assistant Prinicipal Antonio Mercado who oversees our community relations at mercado_antonio@salkeiz.k12.or.us

This is starting to become a trend! For another week we had McKay students competing around the state and being recognized for their great work ethic and discipline. Below you will see a few of the highlights. First we would like to recognize one of our staff members who was awarded the Crystal Apple Award by the Salem Keizer School District. Bilingual Instructional Assistant Maricela Ruiz Herrera received this award for her excellent work in supporting our McKay students inside of the classroom. Counselor Merri Bath-McDonald was also recognized with a nomination for the award. We are beyond proud of these two staff members. Another feat that was accomplished last week was by Vanessa (Nicole) Narvaez, a junior at McKay, she was recently crowned Miss Teen Oregon Latina! Great Job! Finally, you will see that we are celebrating the McKay HS Bowling team for their efforts as well this past week.
As you can see our Royal Scots are doing a great job of representing our community. Below you will read a few more highlights.
- It is with great pleasure and pride that I announce that Piper not only qualified for the final as the top seed after three preliminary rounds, but she also came in 1st place in the final. To achieve this in only her second tournament is a great credit to her, and something we should all take pride in as Royal Scots.

Julia Wells
8th in the 100 breast
Brookelyn Mann
15th in the 200 free
