What is astronomy?

Astronomy is the scientific study of the universe. Astronomy is very important to astronauts and humans. Studying the universe can help scientists protect us from potential catastrophes. It also helps them predict things and understand living things and the Earth better. Astronomy has helped astronomers and scientists discover what the universe is, and how close the Earth is to the Sun. They have discovered that there is a solar system in which the planets are located,also that there are many galaxies.

2. Compare - refracting telescopes and reflecting telescopes.

3. Explain - how telescopes for non visible electromagnetic radiation differ from light telescopes.



The difference between an astronomical unit and a light year is that the astronomical unit is used to measure the distance between the Earth and the Sun, while the light year is used to measure the speed of light to measure distance. A light year tells how how long it takes for light to travel in one year. Astronomical units are often used to measure distances in the solar system. A light year is used to measure galaxies and things outside of the solar system. A light year is almost 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 km (trillion). An astronomical unit is 150,000,000 km (trillion), it is only used to measure distances inside the solar system.


The universe is very big. It has a lot of galaxies and solar systems. Galaxies are made up of dust and gas. The solar system is where the planets are located. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are the planets that surround the Sun in order from being closest to the Sun to farthest from the Sun. The name of our galaxy is called the Milky Way.

The electromagnetic spectrum are all of the frequencies or wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. Visible Electromagnetic Radiation is only visible to the human eye. When white light passes through a prism it turns into a set of different colors. All light travels at the same speed, but different colors of light have different wavelengths. Each color has a different wavelength. The shortest wavelengths of visible light are blue and violet. The longest wavelengths of light are orange and red. Wavelengths that are shorter than blue and violet, or that are longer than orange and red cannot be seen by human eyes.

The invisible electromagnetic spectrum is not seen with human eyes unless you use a special instrument. Scientists discovered Radio and Infrared waves which are invisible unless used to be seen with a special instrument. Infrared is electromagnetic radiation that has waves that are longer than waves of visible light. Radio waves have even longer wavelengths than infrared waves do.

Visible and Invisible electromagnetic spectrums have things in common. They are both electromagnetic radiations.They are also both waves of electric and magnetic fields, and they come from stars. Both collect light to study the radiation, they both form energy, and travel at the same speed. They have a lot of things in common, the main difference is one is visible and the other is invisible.


There are two different telescopes that are made to gather and focus light from distant objects. They are called Reflecting and Reflecting telescopes. The Refracting telescope uses objective lenses that bend the light. The lens focus on different colors of light at different distances. It is difficult to make huge lenses for these telescopes. The other type of telescope is the Reflecting telescope. This telescope has two curved mirrors. These type of telescopes have objective lens that bend light that passes through the lens and focuses the light to be magnified by an eye piece. They have a few things in common. They both are optical and used to study radiation.

Invisible electromagnetic spectrum is not seen with human eyes unless you use a special instrument. Scientists use telescopes to study the universe. There are Earth telescopes and Space telescopes. Space telescopes are more helpful though because sometimes water vapor can prevent Gamma rays, X rays, Ultraviolet, and Infrared rays from reaching Earth's surface. There are a few problems with using Earth telescopes to detect invisible electromagnetic radiation. The problem is sometimes Earth's atmosphere acts as a shield against many forms of electromagnetic radiation. They also help see radiation that Earth based telescopes cannot see. These telescopes can also detect visible and non visible electromagnetic radiation without the obstruction of Earth's atmosphere.
