News from Ms. Hess
Mathematicians began our investigations into multiplying decimals. We have enjoyed playing games to help us practice as well as number puzzles to enrich our mathematical practices.
In literacy, we are practicing writing summaries of books we have read including Shrinking Violet and A Bad Case of Stripes.
Writers have created characters for their fictional, imagined narratives as well as determining what kinds of problems the character will face. We discussed how conflict can be between characters, within a character, or with the environment.
In time traveling, your child is working with a partner to learn about a Native American region and tribe in order to create a Google Slideshow to teach their classmates or a Kahoot quiz to quiz the class over what they learned. Ask your child what region they are studying.
Our Second Step goal is to learn to use an "I message" (I feel ______, when you_______, I need_____) to better communicate when we feel like blaming others for our strong feelings.
IXL Practice for Math: I 2, I 3
Learning Goals This Week:
Math: I can multiply a decimal by a whole number.
Writing: I can generate new ideas to write fiction. I can create conflict in my fictional narratives.
Social Studies: I can learn about a topic from two sources, create a slide, and present my learning.

Band "Concert"
Hello AE 5th Band families,
This is a short note about our upcoming “open rehearsal” during the last week before Holiday Break. The Band traditionally has taken our last rehearsal and opened it up for a student assembly and play the tunes we have been currently working on. We are not ready for a full evening ”Concert” setting yet so this is basically a run through to show the younger students what we have been up to!
This year’s edition will be Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 2:30 in the AE gym. Family and friends are welcome to attend depending on your work/home schedule. Don’t worry if you can’t make it- this is very low key and we will perform twice more this year, once in March, once in May (both evening events).
Students have been working steadily since lessons started and hopefully, our AE students will enjoy their efforts! Please let me know of questions/concerns and I’ll go from there.
Thanks,
Pat Flaherty, 5th Bands
