Band/Chorus Winter Concert
Our first concert of the year is quickly approaching! Here is everything you need to know if you have a student who will be on the stage:
Performer arrival time: 6:30pm
Attire: "Sunday Best" or "Game Day Best" -- we realize this may look different for our students, so we are asking students to use the following guidelines:
- Aim for: clean, tidy clothing that is solid-colored or has a simple pattern -- clothing should cover the shoulders and be school-appropriate. Skirts should extend to the knee or have solid leggings underneath. Shoes should be safe for walking on stage and risers. Collared shirts, ties, dresses, dress slacks, sweaters, etc. are preferred but not necessary.
- Avoid: clothing with words, rips & tears, bright and/or distracting colors and patterns, bare shoulders, low neckline, stains. Avoid jeans, sneakers, tshirts, and hoodies.
Here is everything you need to know if you plan to be in the audience:
Grade 8 Wellness Class
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am writing to inform you of an upcoming unit that is going to be taught in 8th grade wellness within the next few weeks. The unit is called “Best Practices in STD/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention”, with the main emphasis on abstinence. The curriculum was co-authored by Maine Family Planning and the Maine Department of Education. This curriculum has been used in hundreds of classes across Maine to teach teens about healthy sexuality. This unit contains a variety of interactive methods that give teens the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to make sexually responsible decisions.
The unit will focus on helping each student gain the knowledge and communication skills to prevent pregnancy and the transmission of STIs and HIV/AIDS. Abstinence will be given as the safest and 100% most effective choice for the student, but accurate information about other protection methods will also be provided. There will also be lessons on “red flags” of unhealthy relationships, as well as the importance of consent in sexual situations.
If you do NOT want your child to participate in any or all of this unit, please let me know as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Kimberly D. Yorkey

Mrs. Martin: From the Counselor's Corner
It is December 1st today. With the holiday season now in full swing, many feel excited and anticipate gathering with friends and family, exchanging gifts, and eating traditional food together. It is a beautiful time of year for many. It is also a challenging and lonely time for many. As we make our way through the holiday season, be intentional about taking care of yourself and those less fortunate. Some tips that I hope will help you have a happy and healthy holiday season.
- Plan spending.
For most of us, the holidays mean spending extra money. It is important to stick to a budget. It is easy to get caught up in trying to buy everything your loved ones want to receive. It is important to monitor your money so you can still afford the essentials for the rest of the year.
- It is okay to say NO....
With holiday commitments, it is okay to say no to a few or all of them. It is also okay to change things up and try something new. Listen to your needs and the needs of your family. It is impossible to please everybody.
- Create relaxing surroundings.
- Maintain healthy habits.
- Share feelings.
- Respect differences.
- Be realistic.

Galapagos Islands Travel Opportunity 2025
Poland Regional High School Science Teacher Mr. Patrick Martin is starting up STEM based travel tours for PRHS students. Their first trip is to Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands in June of 2025.
This trip is going to be available for the graduating classes of 2026, 2027 and 2028. This means our current 8th graders are going to be eligible to be part of the trip (as they will be rising sophomores! yikes!). There is a parents meeting at 6pm on Tuesday, December 12th in the Library for anyone wishing to learn more. You may also reach out to Mr. Martin directly with questions (pmartin@rsu16.org).

Student Council will meet Thursday December 7th. This will be our only meeting this month and it will be a celebration. Please bring your T-Shirt order form if you haven't already turned it in and a snack to share if you can!
Geek Squad
Geek squad will meet this week during 8th grade lunch/7th grade academic support. The focus will be on video production. We will explore WeVideo, but are also looking for students to share their own resources for video editing! By the end of the week, students will have created a "Movie Trailer" type clip on a topic of their choice.
