Election Day
Tuesday was a day for understanding our local government and the act of choosing our local leaders...Election Day! Our discussions and activities have helped us address the following Indiana Academic Social Studies standards:
- "Understand and explain why it is important for a community to have responsible government."
- "Identify community leaders, such as the county commissioners and city council."
- "Explain that the United States government is founded on the belief of equal rights for its citizens, and that citizens have rights and responsibilities in a particular community, city, state or country."
Organization Day: eLearning
On Tuesday, November 19th, I will be among a dedicated group of Union County teachers who are planning to join fellow Hoosier educators at the Indiana Statehouse to fight for our students. It is important to understand that the decision to make our presence known at the Statehouse rather than being present with our students is not an easy one. We would much rather be at school teaching but, the decade-long attack on public education has brought the frustration level of teachers to this point. On November 19th, our students need us at the Statehouse making it known that the children of Indiana deserve better than what the Indiana General Assembly has been providing them for the last decade:
· Inadequate funding
· Relentless high-stakes standardized testing
· Teacher shortages
· Teachers who aren’t being paid enough
(Indiana ranks 51st in teacher pay increases,
according to a study by the Rockefeller Institute.)
These are all results of legislation that the Indiana General Assembly has passed. For years we have tried to talk and persuade our state representatives to correct these shortcomings but it has become brutally obvious that those efforts continue to be ignored. Please understand this action is so much more than just about teacher salaries. It is about inadequate public school funding and atrocious public education policy. Please feel free to join us at 9:00 am Tuesday, November 19th on the Statehouse steps that face Capital Avenue. The children of Indiana need us all there, and I hope you both understand and support my decision to do so.
The eLearning on November 19 will come to your child via this newsletter. Don't worry, when eLearning was brand new last year, my students had amazing success using this platform, and parents found it stress-free and easy-to-use. I will be reviewing with students how to get to the things they need, so they will know exactly what to do. Additionally, if the assignment(s) require hard copies, I will provide them in advance just as they were for your child last year, so you will not be stuck with printing headaches.
Gimme a Hand!
As you know, we've begun a series of investigations with solids, liquids, and gases... We had a lot of fun creating hands. We did this by pouring three tablespoons of vinegar into an empty glass. Next we added two teaspoons of baking soda into a latex glove, making sure that it all went down into the fingers. After that, we placed the glove on to the top of the glass. Then once the glove was attached, we shook all of the baking soda down into the glass which contained the vinegar. And just like magic, when the baking soda and vinegar mixed, a gas was created, and the hand came to life. This experiment literally only took minutes and the students thought it was the coolest thing. Be sure to check out some of the awesome pictures below. Why not try it at home for your child's added enjoyment?
Veterans Day
As you know, Monday is Veterans Day. I am always appreciative of our veterans, but this year I am keenly reminded of their sacrifice. You see, after the first of the year, my son will leave the country of Spain for Germany as he embarks upon his fifth deployment since joining the United States Air Force. This week, students wrote letters and made cards for area veterans. Be sure to check out the sample photo below. This highlights the following Social Studies Indiana Academic Standard:
- "Explain the importance of being a responsible citizen* of your community, the state, and the nation. Identify people in your community and the state who exhibit the characteristics of good citizenship."
Next Week's Share Topic
Feeling Thankful: The season of gratitude is upon us. What three things are you most thankful for in your life? Be sure to support your choices with reasons and examples. Students will be expounding on this topic with their writing next week.
