First Day of School (looking ahead)
Many people have asked about next year's calendar... it is finalized and available on our website. Here is an update about the first day of school:
August 26th - All children who are returning to the same teacher/classroom
August 27th - All children new to FSMA, entering a new classroom, or with a new teacher
Please note... because of our growth in the upper grades, here is the start date for 4th/5th and 6th graders:
August 26th - All 5th and 6th graders begin
August 27th - All 4th graders begin
Learning to work in a group is a key skill fostered at FSMA. Teachers give lessons on how to work together because we believe that learning grows exponentially when there is a social aspect. Think about it... when you read a book you might get a lot out of it but when you join a book club and talk about it, your learning is often much deeper. In this lesson, children had to work together to build a structure that could withstand an intense weather condition - monsoons, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes... all "happened" in Room 13 today.
Our K/1 classes took a field trip to Winterthur Museum on Friday. The day was spent exploring the Enchanted Woods, going on a tour of the property and studying artifacts. It was a great balance of inside and outside activities, active and quiet times. The teachers reported that there was lots of learning, high levels of engagement and fun!
What is a Peace Table?
In many Montessori classrooms, you will find something called a Peace Table. A Peace Table is a place that promotes active reconciliation between children, encourages a sense of inner harmony, and inspires a cohesive community. It can be quite simple but immensely powerful. Simply put, it provides a place for children to express feelings, resolve conflict, and keep a sense of peace in each classroom community.
