NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 3 Week 3 : 6 August
This coming Saturday, 8 August, is the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop our first and only Australian Saint.
Dear Parents and Staff
Yesterday our First Holy Eucharist candidates participated in a great day of fun activities in preparation for them receiving the Sacrament on the weekend of 15 & 16 August. Next Tuesday (4P) and Wednesday (4M) will attend reconciliation and make their commitment pledge as the final step before they receive Jesus Sacramentally for the first time. Please keep all of our Communion candidates, their families and their teachers in your prayers at this most special time.
A reminder that, due to physical distancing regulations only two members from each candidate’s family are invited to attend.
ASSEMBLY
I can’t wait to see what clever things Miss Rognetta, Miss Gollner, Miss Terranova and the Pre-Primary (P) children have planned to share with us at their Assembly tomorrow. They will be joined by their Year 4P class buddies and two members from each of their families are also invited. Other classes will be able to tune in to the Assembly via a live stream sent to their classroom.
INTERSCHOOL FIXTURES
Unfortunately, the Year Six Eagles Cup fixtures have been cancelled for this year, but Mr Webb has been very proactive in arranging back to back fixtures in AFL, Soccer and Netball over the next two Fridays against St Maria Goretti’s School in Redcliffe. Whilst sharing the same Parish, sporting fixtures between the two schools have not occurred for some time so we look forward to an exciting afternoon of competition against this relatively unknown opposition.
CATHOLIC ARTS
Just as it has been a very difficult and uncertain year for all of us, so, too, has the Catholic Arts been rocked by the COVID-19 pandemic. The upside is that the committee has been creating opportunities for schools to participate. There are normally three major aspects to the Catholic Arts:
- Angelico Art Exhibition – For both Primary and Secondary students
- Performing Arts Festival – Includes Instrumental, choirs, drama, dance etc.
- Carnevale – A showcase in central Perth of Catholic School initiatives and talent.
It has been necessary to cancel the Carnevale for this year but the other two aspects will continue, albeit under different formats.
- The Angelico Exhibition is being set up so that a 3D virtual tour will be recorded and shared with all schools. Our school has entered the Exhibition for the first time this year and I look forward to sharing the selected student’s artwork and that of students from throughout the state with our school community in the near future.
Congratulations to the following students whose artwork has been selected to represent our school:
- Due to the difficulties of live performance with audiences the decision has been made for schools to submit their entries to the Performing Arts Festival via electronic recording. Unfortunately, as we do not have a suitable performance area and recording would be problematic, it has been decided to not enter our groups in the Dance section of the Festival this year. However, our Year Three and School Choirs will participate, and their performance will be recorded next Thursday morning in the Multipurpose Hall. We have employed an audio/visual specialist to assist us to ensure that we achieve the best quality of recording. Copies of the recording will be made available to families within our community.
ADVANCED NOTICE
Our school photos will be taken during the week commencing 17 August for all children from 3-Year-Old Kindy to Year Six. Children from Years One to Six are to wear their full winter school uniform. Parents will be advised of the schedule of photos during the next week.

PRE-PRIMARY CLASS NEWS
ENGLISH
In English this Term, we are learning all about fiction, non-fiction stories and poetry. We are also beginning to develop our knowledge of Consonant Vowel Consonant (CVC) words to write dictated sentences and to read short sentences. We have also started to use the Diana Riggs Promoting Literacy Development Programme to help us with our sound knowledge, letter formation, reading and spelling of CVC words. We have been so impressed to see the Pre-Primary children showing lots of enthusiasm in learning the different actions and rhymes to accompany each of the sounds and trying their very best to sound out trickier words in books that they are reading.
MATHEMATICS:
In Mathematics this Term we started off learning about ordinal numbers and then moved onto learning about money. We enjoyed making our own little shop and exploring coins and notes. This week we are learning about subtraction. We have started to create our own subtraction stories. We are looking forward to all the new things we will be learning in Mathematics this Term.
ART AND TECHNOLOGY:
In Art and Technologies we were given different sized shape blocks to create our own pictures. We came up with some interesting and colourful creations and love seeing our artworks displayed in our classrooms.
LEARNING CENTRES:
We were excited to come back to school and see that our teachers had set up some new learning centres for us to play in. We are lucky to have space corners, vets and ice-cream factories in Pre-Primary this term. We also love to, on some Friday afternoons, move between both PPP and PPM to play with our friends and experience what it is like to be a vet and to work in an ice-cream factory.
We are looking forward to an exciting Term 3 and can’t wait to perform our Edu-Dance concerts at the end of the term!

EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK
Belonging, Being and Becoming – the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) describes the principles, practices and outcomes that support and enhance young children’s learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school.
The framework is a key component of the National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care. The EYLF was developed by the Australian and state and territory governments with input from the early childhood sector and early childhood academics.
The framework offers a vision where 'all children experience learning that is engaging and builds success for life'.
(Sourced from https://www.education.gov.au/early-years-learning-framework-0 )
Each week we will feature one of these principles, practices or outcomes in the newsletter.
