Wairoa College
Newsletter 10th March 2023
Message from the Principal
Tēnā Koutou Katoa
It is nice to see all our students back at school. We have quite a few new families that have joined us this year. I would like to especially welcome them to Wairoa College. Our Year 9 cohort is the biggest we have had in a long time.
This year we have some new staff:
Priya Dayal - Science Teacher
Avikesh Kumar - Mathematics and Science Teacher
Franzi Corker - Music Teacher
Amy Winiana - Teacher aide
We are very lucky to have such enthusiastic staff. I am looking forward to seeing what our students can accomplish this year.
Over the last few weeks Cyclone Gabrielle and then the subsequent flooding has caused devastation to our community. During this time though we saw students and staff rise up to support whanau and strangers. This included helping clear houses, preparing food, helping out at marae, letter box drops of newsletters from Civil Defence and unloading supplies at the airport. Service is about showing leadership, it is about giving up your time to do something for someone else. I would like to acknowledge our school community efforts. We are a very resilient community.
Message from the principal continued
The impact from these events will be ongoing for some time. Families have had to find alternative accommodation temporarily or permanently. For the foreseeable future we can not go to Napier or Hastings for our usual sporting competitions. Much of our health and education support comes from Hastings and Napier. Many of our school bus routes have been suspended. As a school community, students, whanau and staff will be navigating these barriers for a while to come.
Our Prefects and their roles were announced at assembly last week. Congratulations to these students. Our student leaders will do all they can to lift the spirits of our younger students and keep them engaged in fun activities to support their well-being and engagement with school.
We are very proud of the achievements of our students last year. Our tikanga is strong and we are continuing to grow. Wairoa College would like to thank whānau and the community for continuing to support our students to be the best they can be. We are looking forward to another year where we will be continuing to be adaptable and flexible to meet the needs of our students in an ever changing environment.

Attendance
Attendance is a major focus for 2023. ‘Regular’ attendance is defined for statistical purposes as 90% or higher. However, Ministry of Education analysis shows every day has a cumulative impact on a child’s learning and there is no ‘safe’ level of non-attendance. Every day matters. In the first instance you will receive a text and email regarding your child's absence which can be replied to. If we do not hear from you, your child's Whanau Teacher will follow up on unexplained absences. If your child is sick please notify the school by phone, text, or email by 8.30 am. Try to arrange appointments etc. outside school hours or in the holidays. If your child's attendance is falling below 90% their Whanau Teacher and/or Dean will follow up with you on how we might be able to support. This is an important part of our support for you and your child.
Below is how the Ministry of Education thinks about attendance

Leaving school during the day
Students may not leave the school during school hours except by special arrangement – for example, a parent request (verbal or written) for the student to attend a medical appointment. The student must sign out at the office.
Exceptions are:
Lunch passes: Permanent, for students who travel to their own home for lunch each day, and one-off, for students who need to be out of school at lunchtime on a particular day. Issuing of this pass is managed by the office manager, and requires a note from the student's parent/caregiver. If students are not abiding by the arrangement to go to their home their pass may be revoked.
Year 13 passes: Year 13 students who meet the criteria can be issued a pass to leave the school during lunch times. The pass can be withdrawn if the student abuses this privilege or their attendance doesn't meet 85%.

Prefect Camp
Ka Pu te Ruha – Ka Hao te Rangatahi.
This year's Wairoa College prefect camp was a new experience for both the prefect group and the accompanying staff. This was for 2 reasons. First, this year it was decided to take place in Mahia, rather than the previous designated area - Tutira. And second, which was the most frustrating for everyone, none of us knew what our perfect roles were. Our 2 day journey was filled with 2 long, unbearable walks, multiple team building activities and too much sun. Despite my terrible sunburn, I found the experience enjoyable. For our prefect group we were able to identify our faults as a team. We learnt how important communicating with one another is when working as a group. This was a valuable lesson for us to learn and will definitely be one we will use this year.

Year 7 and 8 Department
A very big Welcome, Haere mai, Bienvenido, Willkommen, Talofa, Bula, Namaste to all of our new year 7 and year 8 students for 2023. We are super excited to have you with us at Wairoa College and we are looking forward to an amazing year ahead.
This year we have Koka Rox teaching Year 7 in N2, Whaea Ngapera teaching Bilingual Year 7 and 8 in N3, Mrs Keil teaching Year 8 in N4, Mrs Cotter teaching Year 8 in N5, Mrs Pollock teaching Year 8 in N6 and Ms Loffler teaching Year 7 in N7
Our integrated topic this term is Our Awa. This term we will be immersing ourselves into learning about our awa. On the 6th of April we have planned a trip to Te Rauhina Marae where we will participate in a mihi whakatau and korero about the awa viewing the panels that Te Rauhina’s whare has on the ceiling. From there we will be spending time at the Wairoa Museum as well as participating in activities around our River.
On Monday the 6th of March we had our junior swimming sports at Wairoa Community Centre. Around 34 students swam in races varying from 25 metres to 50 metres. Students displayed our school values of Kotahitanga (working together), Aumangea (Resilience) and personal excellence while participating in swimming sports. Students challenged themselves to enter three or more events. The teachers attending the event were very proud of the students who participated in swimming sports. As a department we would also like to thank the supporters from WYAT, and Sport Hawkes Bay as well as the Wairoa Community Centre for helping with our event. Students from this swimming sports will now be selected to participate in the District Swimming Sports for Primary Schools which is coming up on the 21st of March.
Year 7 and 8 continued
This week our Year 7 students and our new Year 8 students have also been participating in beginning of the year assessments.
We have a visit from the District Health Nurses on Thursday to talk about immunisations which will take place in the last week of Term. Please keep an eye out in your child’s bag for a form from the Nurses for immunisations. These will be coming home and need to be filled in and returned to school as soon as possible. If your child is having their immunisation at the clinic there is a section in the form to complete. I know our nurses and teachers would very much appreciate your support with this.
On the 15th of March we have school wide Athletics Sports and House Day. Different houses have planned activities and themes for dressing up. Athletics sports will take place on the school field in the morning and house activities will take place in the afternoon. Part of this day is the House Chant Challenge which is always exciting to watch as well as the house tug of war challenge. For most of our Year 7 and 8 students this day will be a new experience as it is the first time we have been able to hold it in a few years.

Trades Academy
It is great to be travelling back to Gisborne for Trades Academy. It is awesome to see many new students especially after our East Coast Regions have been effected by the recent floods
Trades Academy works with secondary schools and EIT to provide year-long Trades Programmes to help students achieve NCEA Level 2 and prepare for higher-level study. Students get hands on experience in something that they maybe interested in for future employment. Upon successful completion of an EIT Trades Academy Course students will be acknowledged for their success.

I am a registered Social Worker. How tamariki/children respond to situations is what my
focus is. When tamariki/children have adaptive behaviour that are causing issues, I offer a
safe environment where they can learn to understand their body’s reactions, identify feelings
and then be able to consciously make decisions on how they wish to best respond to the
situation that would be more helpful.
I look forward to working with Wairoa College, Tauira and whanau
