HCS Health & Wellness Newsletter - February 2018
Message from Henderson County Schools Human Resources Department
We hope to make your journey to whole person healthy enjoyable by giving easy-to-use tips and information. Let us help take some of the work out of the work it takes to get there.
In December, the new HCS Employee Fitness Center opened. Prior to using the center, here a few things to know:
- The HCS Fitness Center is located behind the Board of Education office, next to the CSS building.
- You must have your employee ID badge programmed for access. Staff can come by Central Office Monday - Friday 7:30-11:45 a.m. or 12:30-4:15 p.m. You will need to see Lisa Cox in the HR Department, sign the waiver and don't forget to bring your badge.
- There is bottled water available at the fitness center. The water bottles are 50 cents and the honor system will be used.
- There are bathroom keys on the wall. The bathrooms are located on the side of the building.
- The HCS Fitness Center is for HCS employees only.
- No children are allowed in the fitness center.
Health Tips by Health Plus, Vanderbilt Medical Center
- Set SMART goals. General goals such as “exercise more” are not effective. A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Timely. “I will walk 20 minutes over my lunch break on Tuesdays and Thursdays” is a SMART goal.
- Stress Less. Gratitude has been shown to lower stress, which prevents many other physical and mental consequences. Instead of focusing on what your body can’t do or how you wish your body looked, try expressing gratitude for where you are now and the opportunity to make improvements.
- Stay positive. Health goals don’t always go as planned. When you face challenges, focus on all of the positive changes you have made, no matter how small they seem. Treat yourself with kindness, like you would a good friend.

7 Tips for Financial Wellness: By Susie Moore
Here are 7 tips to creating the abundance and calm you deserve:
1. Where are you over-extending? Do an honest expense report for yourself. Where are you spending too much? Rent is a common culprit — experts say this should not be more than 20 percent of your income. Moving to a cheaper place is extremely freeing!
2. Automate your savings. This is a trick many financially savvy people know about. Before you spend a single cent — put away at least 10 percent of your income into a savings account. If you can, put all expected income (or any unexpected bonus money) into this account too. Name it something fun like “Fall Break ticket” or “Dream Home” to remind you why you are socking cash away each month.
3. Limit the entertainment overdose. Eating and drinking out are often the reason the old catch phrase was coined — to have too much month left at the end of the money. Only commit to things you can afford and don’t say yes to things just because you are invited.
4. No spending one day a week. This can be played creatively like a game! If you have food in the fridge, coffee in the cupboard and wifi at home — you are set. A walk outside, making lunch for your partner and Skyping a friend are all free and fun!
5. Remember less is more — need all those cable channels? Need that gym membership if you only go once a week? Look for cheaper alternatives. How much is a drop in exercise class? Is there a free first pass? Is Hulu a better option? Refer to your report to see where you can cut back.
6. Carry cash. Not only does this make you feel wealthy — you are less likely to want to dole out cash on the small things that add up (another coffee, a t-shirt on sale, etc.). Swiping plastic does not have the same realization as to what you are spending as handing over cold, hard cash.
7. Give! Being generous makes us feel abundant and the universe rewards us by giving us more.
February is American Heart Month
American Heart Month / National Wear Red Day
The American Heart Association wants to help everyone live longer, healthier lives so they can enjoy all of life’s precious moments. And we know that starts with taking care of your health. American Heart Month, a federally-designated event, is a great way to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and communities involved. Together, we can build a culture of health where making the healthy choice is the easy choice. Why? Because Life is Why.
Friday, February 2nd is deemed National Wear Red Day. This event is the American Heart Association's national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women. GoRedForWomen.org/WearRedDay
