Family Newsletter for Washington Elementary School
A Word from Mrs. Wolf
At the beginning of each year, there are always kinks to work out as processes and procedures are being reviewed. One such procedure is the dismissal process. I have heard year after year about how undesirable the car line is due to the length of time families must wait. I was a parent at GWES at one time too, and I recall dreading the wait as well. However, our dismissal procedure has been replicated at many schools and is truly one of the safest methods for dismissing large numbers of students. We do not allow parents to walk up to get their children because it compromises our supervision and places greater risk on monitoring who can pick up students. Many of your children live beyond one mile of the school and qualify for transportation by bus. If you need us to check that for you, you can call the school office. Children who walk home exit the playground door with their families. You may see families who leave this exit and enter a car. This is intended to be for walkers (walking from doors of school to doors of home) or for pre-approved and documented medical, educational or employee needs. This is a rarity, not simply a way to avoid the long wait. Each of these families has a documented reason for this alternative. I realize you don't like the car line. As the person trying to call the numbers of 300 cars a day, I too, understand the challenges it causes. These processes and procedures are created for the safety of children and must be followed. A few times, we have had cars and drivers disrespecting each other as they rush to try to be first, cut the line, or not follow the procedure. It is so important that we are respectful to one another and do not allow our dislike for the wait impact the way we treat each other. Attached to this email you are receiving a safety FAQ that outlines the hows and whys we do what we do to keep children safe.
I appreciate in advance your willingness to help us make sure our little Patriots get home safely.
