- What are they?
Eating disorders come in different forms such as Anorexia or Bulimia. They can be defined as psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits. Eating disorders are illnesses, not character flaws or choices. Individuals don’t choose to have an eating disorder. You also can’t tell whether a person has an eating disorder just by looking at their appearance. People with eating disorders can be underweight, normal weight or overweight. It’s impossible to diagnose anyone just by looking at them.
- What causes them?
There is a big misconception about society when pertaining to eating disorders. Many people think that it has to do with wanting to lose weight or be thin, but it is an illness. People who are affected by this illness use bad eating habits or diets to cope with overwhelming emotions or situations. This is not the only reason why people have this illness. It can also be caused by the perception of "the perfect body image" in magazines and all over the media. "69% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of a perfect body shape."
