Did containment of communism work?
Only two choices yes or no by:Juliana Charles
What is communism anyways?
Communism is a government where the government decides everything. Everyone is treated "equal". No matter what job you do everyone gets paid the same. There are no higher social classes. The basic idea of communism is we are all the same. It is the idea of a utopia or perfect place.
The Korean War
North and South Korea were fighting ,the united states fought for South Korea and the Soviet Union fought for North Korea. Because of the United States Korea was divided by the 38th parallel. The United States were afraid that if Korea became communist other neighbor countries would become communist that was known as the domino theory. The communist government of North Korea were trying to invade South Korea. In 1950 China came to North Korea's aid. During the war nothing was really gained it was just on and off fighting (1951). On July 27,1953 there was an agreement made that divide Korea called the armistice that stopped war. Korea was divided at the 38th parallel. North Korea being communist and South Korea being democratic. There were economic problems in North Korea but South Korea was successful.
The Vietnam War
Background: The Vietnamese and french were fighting once the Vietnamese actually defeated the french there was a peace conference dividing Korea into north and south Vietnam.Point: North Korea was communist and South Vietnam was non-communist. Some people in South Vietnam still wanted communism and wanted the whole country to be communist again. The U.S.A was afraid that if the country became communist all the neighboring countries would do the same. We went and fought over there but did not succeed. The guerilla fighters were a huge reason for the united states defeat.
Communism In China
Mao Zedong was a believer in communism who ruled over China. In 1949 the Nationalist forced Mao's red army out of the southern part of China the red army had to march 6,000 miles to get out. Mao's red army defeated the nationalist. October 1st,1949 Mao created People's Republic of China it became communist. In 1958 The Great Leap Forward happened Mao wanted China to have power so to make it powerful China had to be industrialized. Mao needed workers so he took farmers to work in factories. There were less farmers and food was not being made which caused starvation. In 1966 there was a Cultural Revolution which was to make the people feel better. The point was to forget the past. He wanted everyone to celebrate the communist government.
So yes or no did containment work?
No
I believe containment of communism did not work because it spread from North Korea to South Korea even though South Korea quickly changed to democracy it still spread there. From North Korea it ended up in Vietnam north Vietnam was communist then both north and south are communist just making Vietnam. Communism also spread to Cuba far away from SE Asia. Even though there are only 5 communist countries today it still spread from North Korea. Therefore communism was not contained.
