CCSD School Closing Process
Dear SIES families,
For your reference and information, the following is the process used to signal a school closure. The decision to close a school and transition to virtual learning is made at the district level, not by the school principal, nurse, or teachers at individual schools.
CCSD Procedure:
District staff closely monitors the number of positive cases, close contacts that become positive cases, the number of quarantined students, and the school’s ability to cohort students. At a minimum, when the percentage of positive school cases per total enrollment nears 5%, stronger consideration is given to having the school transition to virtual. The final determination to go to 100% virtual is made based on the ability to operate safely while providing the best possible educational support for students and after consultation with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
At Sullivan's Island Elementary, our positive COVID numbers reached 5% on Tuesday. The district notified me that afternoon that school would close for two weeks. I informed the teachers immediately and the parents within 40 minutes after receiving that directive. We will use this same process for any future classroom quarantines or school-wide closings.
It’s been a trying couple of days for our entire school community. Take good care of yourself, your children, and each other. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your classroom teacher, Ms. Russell, or me, and we will do our absolute best to serve and support you. The teachers and I cannot wait to see the students back in school in two weeks!
Many thanks,
Principal Susan King
