Language Assistance Program Broad-Based Committee
The LAP Broad-Based Committee is an extension of the work we do with our English Learner families. The committee consists of representatives from the LAP Department, district/school administrators, and parents. We would like to invite classroom teachers to attend. We meet twice a year and our meetings consist of current enrollment, English Learner successes and areas of growth, strategies for parents, and guest speakers. If you are a classroom teacher who is interested in serving on this year’s LAP Broad Based Committee, please talk with your administrators and then contact Dr. Denita Harris, via email or at ext. 8628. We would love to have you join us!

Naviance Updates
Did you know that Naviance allows to you add welcome messages in multiple languages? The program will not translate the text for you, but I would be happy to work with Dr. Harris to ensure our Family Connection is welcoming. Check out the directions for adding multiple languages here!
SAT, PSAT, NMSQT Updates
Today is an exciting day for PSAT/NMSQT! As of today, they are offering free, personalized practice tools available for all students. The PSAT/NMSQT practice test and four SAT practice tests that we released earlier this year were written and constructed using all of the same standards and processes used for operational exams. Students can be confident that by taking these tests, they will be getting the highest quality practice. With representative questions and a distribution of difficulty and content that is equivalent to what will appear on test day, these practice tests are a significant investment in student success.
- The four SAT practice tests (with scoring instructions)
- The PSAT/NMSQT practice test (with scoring instructions)
- Additionally, starting today, Khan Academy will be reporting scaled scores when students complete any of the SAT Practice Tests directly on the Official SAT Practice site.

HOSTS Cancellations and Delays
As mentors begin, we will be communicating our processes related to HOSTS cancellations. Please take note and help us with the following procedures to ensure that we’re valuing mentors’ time and clearly communicating the same messages:
- There are currently no scheduled cancellations of HOSTS for assessments (ISTEP, IREAD, etc.). As we get more information about the testing schedule, we’ll make a DISTRICT decision about cancelling HOSTS or not. Individual buildings should not cancel HOSTS for assessments or activities.
- If the 2nd or 3rd grade classes are attending a field trip, please work with your HOSTS Instructor to OVER COMMUNICATE with mentors that HOSTS is cancelled for that grade level session, and only for your school.
- Please do not ask students from other grade levels (1st or 4th) to ‘sub’ in HOSTS to do activities with mentors. We’ve received feedback from mentors that they don’t always think this is the best use of their time.
- On 2-hour delay days, all sessions that are scheduled before or overlapping the late start time will be cancelled. We’ll encourage mentors to watch the news, and HOSTS Instructors will communicate directly with their mentors about these cancellations (email, text, Remind 101, etc.).
Elementary Core Database
Important Core Database Reminders:
- Please DO NOT change the file names or make copies of the files . When we export the data from the database, it creates errors when there have been filename changes.
- If there are 1-2 students missing from your roster, you can add them at the bottom of the list (using the student's official full name, please). Please find the student number that is in the same format as the ones included on the spreadsheet, and carefully add that ID number. If you want help with this, please contact Thelma Webb.
- If there are students listed who are not currently in your class, you can backspace within the cell to erase the name. Please don't delete cells or rows.
- If students leave your class in the middle of the year, please just leave their BOY data in the spreadsheet and the other fields in that row blank. Please don't delete them from your spreadsheet.
- If there are issues or problems with your class roster, beyond those listed above, please contact Thelma Webb. If there are issues with the spreadsheet, please contact Anne Olson.

Read & Write for Google
We have a district 3-12 license for the Google extension Read and Write! Read & Write for Google is a fantastic tool that can be used for research, reading text, speech to text, organizing vocabulary, translating text, and defining words with text or images. Universally designed, it can be used with a wide range of students for various needs. Check out this link for more information! If you have questions, please work with your school iTEC teachers. If you would like more information, just email Robbie Grimes.
Chromebook Care
One of the many great things about Chromebooks is that you can simply close the screen to lock the device and put it to sleep. Fantastic for interruptions or just wanting to stop, take a break, and resume work later. However, periodically there are updates that come through the network having to do with security and function of the device that need to be installed on the Chromebooks. These updates happen automatically without any action by the user. Unfortunately, the updates do NOT happen if the screen is simply closed and the device is not turned off completely.
We know of many students who have not restarted their Chromebooks for several weeks. They are just closing the screen daily and keeping the device charged. Please encourage your students to shut down their Chromebooks at least once per day. This will help tremendously when it comes to bugs, speed, security, etc. that can be fixed by installing updates.
One other thing to note is that we've found the speed of the Chromebook is directly related to the number of extensions that are running on the user's account. If the Chromebook is running slowly, go to settings and disable or remove any extensions that are not being used regularly.
