Super Kid Cass visited K today!

Cass from the Super Kids reading program visited our kindergarten students today. During her visit, students were able ask Cass about her other Super Kids friends, and find out more about Cass herself. As you can see from the photos below, our K students enjoyed the opportunity to dress up like their favorite Super Kid. Thanks to Mrs. Buttari and Mrs. Stahl (District Reading Coach) for making the arrangements!

4th Grade Field Trip A Success!

Our fourth-grade students enjoyed a field trip to the Constitution Center and Historic Philadelphia today. Fortunately, the weather held out, allowing our group to enjoy new exhibits at the Constitution Center, as well as participate in a scavenger hunt within the historic locations around Independence hall. Thanks to our PTO for supporting this wonderful trip, and to our chaperones for joining us today. We hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Pearl Buck and Tawanka Staff enjoy a softball game.

Several weeks ago, Tawanka elementary invited the staff of Pearl Buck to join them in an after-work, all-for -fun softball game. Always up for a challenge, the Pearl "Barnstormers" were quickly organized. Motivated by the prospect of free hot dogs, burgers, soda and water, the Barnstormers quickly took the lead in yesterday's game, with big hits and awesome fielding. Great fun was had by all.

We'd like to thank Team Tawanka for the invite, and for sharing a few players with us (Buck had a few players on the sick list). Final score? Buck Barnstormers 9; Team Tawanka 8.

Free and Mostly Free Things to do this summer.

Follow this link for a list of free and mostly free things to do this summer. Thanks to Mrs. Krom for taking her time to create this list. We can't vouch for the businesses or accuracy of the information on the sites, but we thought the various links would be helpful to get you started with some ideas for those unscheduled or rainy summer days.

Parent Input for Classing

If you would like to provide input regarding your child's homeroom teacher for next school year, please send an email to Mr. Kern by Friday, May 17. Parent input is given appropriate consideration during our process, but is not the sole determinant for classing students. Therefore, please know that placement with a particular teacher cannot be promised or guaranteed. It is more helpful to indicate the teaching style you feel best suites your child, and, as such, we strongly encourage you to approach your input letter in this manner.

4th Grade Move-Up Ceremony

June 13th - 4th Grade Move Up Ceremony. This will be a ticketed event. Due to space limitations, only 2 tickets per 4th grade family will be provided. Guests will be admitted into the school beginning at approximately 9:15. Seating is limited to ticketed individuals. If a parent must bring a non-school-age child, the child must sit on the parent's lap. Strollers cannot be accommodated.

What should my child wear for the ceremony?

We ask for all 4th grade students to be neatly dressed for Move-Up Day. Please do not feel you need to purchase special clothing for this event. Boys are encouraged to wear a shirt with a collar, pants like khakis or dress pants, and dress shoes. Dress shorts for boys and girls are also appropriate. Necklines and hem lines should be conservative. Students will be seated in chairs on the stage. Please keep this in mind when choosing attire. Line of sight from the floor may present uncomfortable situations. Flip flops or similar casual footwear are not appropriate for this event. Students will be walking up steps and across the stage during the ceremony. If you have questions about an outfit, please feel free to call or email Mr. Kern.

Warm Weather Attire

To help ensure your child is appropriately dressed and prepared for the approaching warm weather, please use the following information to guide clothing choices for school.

  • T-shirt-style shirts are the simplest choice. They cover all that needs to be covered.
  • Please avoid shirts that expose the torso due to a mid-waist length, or large arm holes allowing the torso and/or undergarments to be seen.
  • Sandal-style shoes are to have a firm sole and heel strap. No flip-flop styles.
  • Sneakers are best. They protect the foot and allow for easy running and play.
  • Water bottles for recess are permitted.
  • Hats for recess are also permitted.
  • Please apply sun-screen at home.

Volunteer Clearances

Parents who plan to serve as chaperones and volunteers for school must have current clearances on file with the school. For additional information on clearances, including all related links, please visit this District webpage. Since the process can take several weeks, please file for your clearances ASAP so that they are in place when needed.

PTO Board Member Maureen Krom is offering free Notary services for any Buck parent who may need to have volunteer forms notarized. You can contact Mrs. Krom at

Be Allergy Aware!

Due to varied allergy and dietary needs, please contact your child's teacher before sending in food or other items intended to be distributed to students in a classroom (e.g. birthday celebrations, class parties). Students should not share food at any time during school - even with a close friend. A seemingly harmless food item may unexpectedly contain allergens, or interact with other medical conditions. Depending on the health needs within a classroom, teachers may choose to avoid food-oriented experiences altogether. Please consider non-food treats as an alternative. Speak directly with your child's teacher. Do not send in any items until the teacher has responded and confirmed the appropriateness of your request. Thanks!
